Service Animals
Under the American with Disabilities Act, service animals are not considered an accommodation but a civil right. Students do not need to register with Accessibility & Disability Services to utilize a service animal.
You may bring service animals, as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act, into SLCC public buildings, classrooms, offices, etc. Only dogs and in some cases miniature horses are considered service animals.
College personnel are only allowed to ask individuals two questions about the animal:
- Is this dog a service animal required because of a disability?
- What work or task has the dog been trained to perform?
Restrictions
Animals other than dogs (or miniature horses) are not considered service animals under the ADA. Dogs that do not perform an identifiable task or function directly related to a disability or whose sole function is to provide comfort or emotional support do not qualify as service animals under the ADA.
A service animal may be excluded from campuses or classrooms when the animal’s behavior poses a threat to the health and safety of others, or if you fail to maintain proper control of the animal. Each occurrence will be evaluated on an individual basis.
