Why is the Biology Department discontinuing BIOL 1170/1175 and BIOL 1210/1215?

• BIOL 1210/1215 is being renumbered to reflect Utah "common course numbering requirements" for this course within the USHE system. BIOL 1170/1175 will be discontinued after Summer 07 because it is not accepted by other Utah colleges and universities as biology prerequisite credit and this may disadvantage students wishing to transfer to those institutions.

When will these Biology changes take effect?

• Fall Semester 2007

What is the replacement course for BIOL 1170/1175 and BIOL 1210/1215?

• BIOL 1610 and BIOL 1615 for Lab

What are the pre-requisites to register for BIOL 1610/1615?

• MATH 0970 (Elementary Algebra) with a "C" or better or equivalent CPT/ACT score and RDG 0990 with a "C" or better equivalent CTP/ACT score. Attention: starting FALL 2007, MATH 0970 will be renumbered to MATH 0990.

Do I have to take a RDG 0990 course?

• Not if you tested into ENGL 1010 or already took ENGL 1010. The CPT reading scores are good for two years. There is a  $15 fee to retake a CPT Reading test at the Assessment Center.

Do I have to take a MATH 0970 course?

• Not if you scored into MATH 1010 (Intermediate Algebra) or you have earned credits for MATH 1010 and above. The CPT math scores are good for one year. There is a $15 fee to retake a CPT math test at the Assessment Center. If you want to retake both math and English, the fee is $15. (Retaking all or part of the CPT is $15.)

I took BIOL 1170 and BIOL 1210 but I received a grade of C- or less. If I retake the class, are the pre-requisites waived?

• No. Meeting the pre-requisite requirements will assist you to do better in class.

Do I have to take BIOL 1610/1615 to meet the pre-requisites for higher level of Biology courses?

• Yes. Unless you previously completed BIOL 1170/1175 or BIOL 1210/1215 with a "C" or better.

Will a better grade in BIOL 1610 replace a low grade in BIOL 1170 or 1210?

• Yes. Please fill out a "repeat course form" at Enrollment Services.
