Math scores are valid for one year and English scores are valid for two years for class placement. It is recommended that students practice taking the CPT test before taking it at the assessment center. The following website provides a list of websites where students can practice their math and English skills before taking the test; www.slcc.edu/academicadvising/cpt.asp Please allow two hours to take the test.

WHAT DOES THE TEST COVER?
The CPT consists of three basic sections:
- Reading Comprehension
- Sentence skills
- Mathematics
The tests are given on a computer; however, no previous computer experience is needed to take the test. Answering most questions requires using two keys.
The results of the CPT are used to recommend appropriate course work in which you can succeed as you begin your education at SLCC. Your CPT results do not effect your admissions to the college; they are used for placement in Math and English. Financial Aid will not be processed until CPT testing is completed and scores are input into the student's records. Math placement test results are valid for one year only.
SOME ADVANTAGES OF THE CPT:
- NO APPOINTMENT IS NECESSARY. CPTs are given on a walk-in basis.
- IT IS NOT A TIMED TEST. You can take all the time you need.
- IT IS SHORT. There are 12-17 questions per section; the entire test takes about 1 1/2 to 2 hours for most students.
- THE COMPUTER ADJUSTS THE QUESTIONS TO YOUR ABILITY LEVEL. (This way, the questions are neither too easy nor too hard.)
- IT IS HIGHLY ACCURATE. CPT gives a reliable indication of your skills.
- RESULTS ARE IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE. Within minutes of completing the test. Please feel free to ask for a print out for registration. It takes 24 to 48 hours for the test scores to be input into the computer system.
- RETESTS For English are limited to 1 per year. Mathematics may be tested twice per semester. A $15 fee is charged for retests.
