Experiential Language Credit Options for SLCC Students

Most universities require second year proficiency of foreign language study, or course work equivalent to at least fourth-semester (2020-level), or proficiency by examination at that level, for a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree. If a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree (which does not require language credit) is sought, these language credits would count as elective credit. Experiential language credit may be obtained in one of the following ways:

  1. If you would like to take a language class, SLCC offers second year (or Intermediate) classes in Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. Register for the Intermediate II, 2020 course. Completion of this course with a C- or better will clear the BA requirement at any of the Utah State Institutions of Higher Education whether or not more credit is purchased. A "B" grade or better in the Intermediate course is required to purchase the first and second semester language classes. To purchase this credit, obtain the "Teacher Grade Verification" form in the Assessment Center. Have the instructor sign it and return it to the Assessment Center and pay $25 each, for the 1010 (5 cr.) and 1020 (5 cr.) courses eligible for purchase. The Assessment Center will notify Registration and the credit will be posted on your transcript as non-graded (P for passing) credit.

Graded Credit                             4 cr.             SLCC Tuition
    Non-graded credit                    10 cr.             Cost $50.00

  2. The University of Utah offers the MLA (Modern Language Association) exam at a cost of $75. It is offered monthly in French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Russian. It consists of reading, writing, listening and comprehension. Details for taking this exam are on their website at:
    http://www.sa.utah.edu/testing/programs/mla.html
Candidates must pre-register and obtain an admission ticket at least two days before the day of the test. The Testing Center is located in Room 498 of the Student Services Building (SSB) on the University of Utah campus. Because you will have identified yourself as a SLCC student, the University will automatically notify SLCC of your test results. SLCC will post 16 non-graded credits to your SLCC transcript at no charge. Your only cost for this credit will be the cost of the exam.

    Non-graded Credit                    16 cr.                Cost $75

  3. Brigham Young University (BYU) offers foreign language testing in many languages. See their website for details:

    http://hrc.byu/FLATS.html

For Non-BYU student, the exam is offered twice a year (fall and spring) in three locations (Dixie, BYU Idaho, and BYU). A summer test is also offered exclusively at BYU. The test evaluates listening comprehension, reading comprehension, vocabulary and grammatical accuracy. To take a test, obtain a "Non-BYU Student Registration Form" for any SLCC Admissions Office. Complete the registration form and send it with the $25 testing fee to the address listed on the form, no later than eight days before the test date. A reminder will be sent to you with the time and place of the test. After the test has been scored, an official copy of the results will be sent to SLCC. SLCC will post 12 non-graded semester credits to your transcript at no charge. (State schools are currently accepting the 12 credits from BYU's language test as satisfying second year language requirements for a BA degree). The only cost to you for this credit will be the cost of the exam.

    Non-graded Credit                          12 cr.               Cost $30

  4. SLCC offers the national "College Level Examination Program (CLEP)". It is available only in French, German, or Spanish. The test is 90 minutes and consists of two 45 minute sections; a reading and multiple choice section, and a listening and multiple choice section. To maximize the granting of credit for foreign language and the transferability of credit to other state institutions, one of the other options above would be preferable. For more information regarding this test contact the Assessment Center at SLCC (957-4269)

    Non-graded Credit                         10 cr.                Cost $80
