The Salt Lake Community College Academic Standards Policy exists to motivate and support students in good academic standing and to help students reach their academic potential and maintain an expected level of academic performance at the institution. The policy focuses on active intervention with students who demonstrate academic jeopardy and provides support services necessary to encourage their potential success.

Students need to have a 2.0 cumulative GPA in order to remain in good standing with Salt Lake Community College. Transfer students should be aware that the GPA they need to have in order to be accepted at the university they plan on attending is typically above a 2.0 GPA.

    3.   What is Academic Notification?

Academic Notification means your semester GPA is below a 2.0 but your cumulative GPA is a 2.0 or above. You are still eligible to register for classes. If you have any questions or academic concerns you may contact the Academic Advising office for an appointment. Appointments can be scheduled by calling 957-4978.

    4.   What happens if my GPA falls below a 2.0 for the first time?

The first time your cumulative GPA AND term GPA fall below a 2.0, with 15 or more credits, you will be placed on Academic Warning. You will receive a letter letting you know about your academic standing and you will have a registration hold placed on your record. You will need to meet with an academic advisor to have this hold removed.

      5.   What is the difference between Academic Warning, Conditional                                  Enrollment, and Academic Probation?

The 1st time your semester GPA and cumulative GPA fall below a 2.0 and you have 15 or more credits, you will be placed on Academic Warning and a hold will be placed on your registration. You will receive a letter with information about meeting with an advisor in order to have the hold removed.

The 2nd time your semester GPA and cumulative GPA fall below a 2.0 you will be placed on Conditional Enrollment and a hold will be placed on your registration. You will receive a letter informing you that you need to meet with an advisor in order to get your hold removed. Your advisor will review your academic performance and develop an academic plan with you. You will then need to meet monthly with your advisor to monitor your progress.

The 3rd time your semester GPA and cumulative GPA fall below a 2.0 you will be placed on Academic Probation and you will have a hold placed on your registration. You will receive a letter explaining that you will need to complete an appeal process in order to get your hold removed. Your advisor will assist you in filling out the appeal form. The form will include your proposed class schedule and work schedule. It will also include a written statement from you stating the changes they have made to insure their academic success.

Appeals will be reviewed by a committee, which will determine the conditions of attendance for the student.

    6.   What if my semester GPA is above a 2.0 but my cumulative GPA is still                      below a 2.0?

If your semester GPA is above a 2.0 but your cumulative GPA remains below a 2.0 they will be on “continued status.” This will be Continued Academic Warning, Continued Conditional Enrollment or Continued Probation depending on your status from the prior semester. You will not have a registration hold at this level. Once your cumulative GPA rises to a 2.0 or above you will be in good standing again.

    7.   How can I raise my GPA?

The fastest way to raise your GPA is to retake classes that you have done poorly in. Upon completing the class you need to fill out a repeat course form in order to have the higher grade replace the lower grade in your GPA calculation. Repeat course forms can be found at Enrollment Services.

    9.   How can I be a better student?

Becoming a better student often times mean being aware and taking advantage of resources and support that is available to you. Salt Lake Community College has many resources available to students to help them be academically successful:
