Career InformationDraftsman / CAD TechnicianJob Description: Drafting using CAD in Architecture, Interior Design, Structural, Civil, Landscape, Construction, Fabrication, and other related professions. Draftsman will begin doing basic drawings and will progress as their skills and knowledge do of the profession. They will become senior draftsman and project managers who will oversee and direct the drafting work. Job Tasks: Draft using AutoCAD or other CAD programs, call consultants and others to coordinate project information, project research for codes and materials, coordinate changes and modifications to drawings, cost estimates, area take offs, etc. Traits NeededAptitudes: Detail oriented, CAD proficient, able to learn new things quickly, construction knowledge, code knowledge, self motivated, thirst for knowledge. Interests: Passion for profession. Especially for materials, methods of construction and designs. Temperament: Easy to work with and able to work extremely well with others even under deadlines. Virtually all projects involve people and good people skills are essential. Career and Salary Options-Typical Entry Level
Working ConditionsBasic office situations. Every firm is organized differently and office atmosphere can also vary. Project deadlines drive a lot of the work in firms. Extra hours need to be worked to meet them. Usually without any additional compensation. Physical DemandsLight demands physically. Job OutlookArchitecture and Construction jobs are tied directly to the economy. The market is fairly strong currently and will probably remain fairly constant. There always seem to be jobs available for those with great CAD and Architectural skills. Construction Managers are also in demand. |
