Courses Offered Every Semester

CEAS 0100 FUNdamentals of Interpreting (3ch)
Students learn basic skills related to interpreting and engage in activities to successfully incorporate skills into their work. Skills include cognitive processing, discourse analysis, memory, concentration, visualization, etc.

CEAS 0110 Utah Written Test Preparation (3ch)
Students examine interpreting philosophies. Focus is on the intercultural and interlingual challenges which may arise during the interpreting process. Students learn and apply the code of professional conduct.

CEAS 0150 Beginning Interpreting: Consecutive to Simultaneous (3ch)
Students learn the necessary skills related with interpreting sign to voice and voice to sign. Students will learn to manage processing, mood, intent, semantic choice, register, cohesion, expansion, compression and equivalency as it relates to discourse. Course will include stimulus for varying skill levels to cater to the needs of students seeking Utah Novice

CEAS 0160 Sorenson Video Relay Service Observation (1ch)
*Prerequisite: must be enrolled in at least one other Fast Track course
Students have the opportunity to observe interpreters at work at Sorenson Video Relay Service. After observation students will participate in online discussions about the interpreting work and language use that was observed. Students who submit observation hours are compensated for their observation time monthly.

CEAS 0210 NIC Written Test Preparation (ONLINE)
Students examine interpreting philosophies. Focus is on the intercultural and interlingual challenges which may arise during the interpreting process. Students learn and apply the code of professional conduct. Students will be involved with weekly online postings and assignments. Students must have frequent and reliable access to the internet. (One in class orientation required)

CEAS 0300 Practice of Interpreting (3ch)
Students engage in hands-on interpreting skill building via interactions with mentors, peers and colleagues. Various interpreting specialties will be addressed including legal, medical, mental health, etc. Students will participate in activities both inside and outside of the classroom; online technologies will also be utilized to maximize learning. (Please note due to one-on-one meetings this class is capped at 3 students.)

CEAS 0400 ASL for Interpreters (3 ch)
Students learn the nuances of American Sign Language including linguistics, effective classifier use and contextualization techniques.

Fall Courses

CEAS 0120 Interpreting Skills: ASL and English (3ch)
Students learn the necessary skills related with interpreting sign to voice and voice to sign. Students will learn to manage processing, mood, intent, semantic choice, register, cohesion, expansion, compression and equivalency as it relates to discourse. Course will include stimulus for varying skill levels to cater to the needs of students seeking Utah Novice, Utah Intermediate, and National Certification

CEAS 0320 Interactive Skills: Role-play (3ch)
Students learn the necessary skills related to the role-play situation. Students will learn to manage processing, mood, intent, semantic choice, register, cohesion, culture mediation, language assessment, turn-taking and equivalency as it relates to discourse.

CEAS 0900 Special Topics: Voicing (3ch)
Students will become comfortable and confident with their ability to comprehend American Sign Language and express an equivalent message in English. Students will discuss compression techniques as well as improve English language skills

CEAS 0910 Specialized Skills: Stress and Anxiety Management for Interpreters (3 ch)
As Interpreters, there are many times we experience job related stress and anxiety, but nothing seems to call forth these feelings like taking an evaluation test. This class will draw on a variety of proven strategies to assist interpreters in facing stressful testing and interpreting situations with calm confidence.

Spring Courses

CEAS 0200 Art of Interpreting (3 ch)
Students learn the process of interpreting bridging the gap between consecutive and simultaneous interpreting, ethical issue discussions will be held as preparation for the NIC interview. Skills relating to working with a mentor will be discussed.

CEAS 0220 Transliterating Skills (3 ch)
Students learn the necessary skills related with transliterating sign to voice and voice to sign. Students will learn to manage processing, mood, intent, semantic choice, register, cohesion, expansion, compression and equivalency as it relates to discourse.

CEAS 0900 Special Topics: Fingerspelling and Numbers (3ch)
Students will take an in-depth look at the nuances of fingerspelling and numbers of American Sign Language. Students will hone their expressive and receptive fingerspelling skills and apply those skills in their interpreting work.

CEAS 0920 Specialized Skills: Visualization (3 ch)
Interpreters often admit they struggle with visualization. However, visualization is simply a product of our memory. It draws upon our experiences and knowledge of any given topic and allows us to create a mental image of the information. Visualization allows interpreters to transfer mental processes into clear representations of the source language messages. During this eight-week course, all sub-processes of the interpreting process will be explored, but the focus will be on visualization and imagery and building these skills so they can be put to work in the daily task of interpreting. This is a fun class full of enjoyable activities that will have a direct impact on interpreting skill.
