Overview
The ASLI Fast Track Program is a non-credit, grant funded program. This program is intended for certified interpreters who want to improve their skills and advance their certification. The program classes are offered Spring, Summer, and Fall semesters. Students commit to at least one semester. Program classes are offered both late afternoon and evening.
Upon achieving certification, students who receive grant funding are required to remain in the state of Utah and work as an interpreter for the same duration as they were funded. (i.e. if you are funded for one-year you are required to work one-year). Any breech of this contract will result in students reimbursing the program for funds paid out on their behalf. (Exceptions are made on a case by case basis.)
Benefits
Tuition, Fee and Book waiver: The program is completely free to students who qualify. Tuition and fees are waived and books are lent to students for the semester at no charge. If a book is damaged students are asked to pay for a replacement.
Testing: All students are eligible for $300 towards State testing. This is equivalent to two Utah Professional Tests ($150 each). The funds can be used for the State Written, Novice or Professional Test.
Sorenson Observations: SLCC has partnered with the Sorenson Video Relay Service SLC call center for Fast Track students to be able to observe working Video Interpreters. SLCC will compensate you for your time of observation. You are able to observe for 40 hours per semester a maximum of 10 hours per month. You are paid $15.00/hour of observation. You must be enrolled in the corresponding course CEAS 1060.
Open Lab and Mentoring: As a student of the Fast Track Program you have access to the all digital lab for recording and analysis of your interpreting skills. You also have access to trained language and interpreting mentors to work on individual skills. Open lab times are posted every semester no appointment is needed to meet with a language mentor.
Effective January 1, 2009 the Salt Lake Community College American Sign Language Interpreting Fast Track Program has new requirements for those individuals who currently do not hold any type of Interpreting Certification. Individuals must have a degree or must be pursuing a degree from another institution. The program has selected courses that will help you obtain Novice Certification in one year's time. These courses will be offered every semester. After being in the program for one-year if certification is not obtained we will re-evaluate your participation in the program and see if other resources are necessary. The purpose of the program is to get individuals certified at the Utah Professional Level. We do pay for testing and encourage you to take the test after completion of the Pre-Requisite courses.
You are Required to take the following courses, and obtain Certification before other courses can be taken.
CEAS 0100 FUNdamentals
CEAS 0110 Utah Written Test Prep (unless you have successfully passed the test)
CEAS 0150 Beginning Interpreting: Consecutive to Simultaneous
