(CRN 50270) CEAS 0100 FUNdamentals of Interpreting (3ch)
Monday 3:30-5:30 pm - Holly Nelson

Students learn basic skills related to interpreting and engage in activities to successfully incorporate skills into their work. Skills include cognitive processing, discourse analysis, memory, concentration, visualization, etc.

(CRN 50271) CEAS 0110 Utah Written Test Preparation (3 ch)
ONLINE - Michelle Draper

Students examine interpreting philosophies. Focus is on the intercultural and interlingual challenges which may arise during the interpreting process. Students learn and apply the code of ethics. This class is intended to prepare students for the Utah Written Exam. Students are strongly encouraged to take the Utah Written Exam upon completion of this course.

(CRN 50273) CEAS 0150 Beginning Interpreting: Consecutive to Simultaneous (3ch)

Students learn the necessary skills related with interpreting sign to voice and voice to sign. Students will learn to manage processing, mood, intent, semantic choice, register, cohesion, expansion, compression and equivalency as it relates to discourse. Course will include stimulus for varying skill levels to cater to the needs of students seeking Utah Novice.

(CRN 50274) CEAS 0160 Sorenson Video Relay Service Observation (1ch)

*Prerequisite: must be enrolled in at least one other Fast Track course

Students have the opportunity to observe interpreters at work at Sorenson Video Relay Service. After observation students will participate in online discussions about the interpreting work and language use that was observed. Students who submit observation hours are compensated for their observation time monthly.

(CRN 50276) CEAS 0210 NIC Written Test Preparation (3 ch)

Students examine interpreting philosophies. Focus is on the intercultural and interlingual challenges which may arise during the interpreting process. Students learn and apply the code of professional conduct. Students will be involved with weekly online postings and assignments. Students must have frequent and reliable access to the internet. (One in class orientation required.)

(CRN 50278) CEAS 0300 Practice of Interpreting (Mentoring) (3 ch)
Flex time/day - Holly Nelson

Students engage in hands-on interpreting skill building via interactions with mentors, peers and colleagues. Various interpreting specialties will be addressed including legal, medical, mental health, etc. Students will participate in activities both inside and outside of the classroom; online technologies will also be utilized to maximize learning. (Please note due to one-on-one meetings this class is capped at 3 students.)

Students learn the nuances of American Sign Language including linguistics, effective classifier use and contextualization techniques.

Students learn the necessary skills related with interpreting sign to voice and voice to sign. Students will learn to manage processing, mood, intent, semantic choice, register, cohesion, expansion, comprehension and equivalency as it relates to discourse. Course will include stimulus for varying skill levels to cater to the needs of students seeking Utah Novice, Utah Intermediate, and National Certification.

(CRN 50280) CEAS 0320 Interactive Skills: Role-play (3 ch)

Students learn the necessary skills related to the role-play situation. Students will learn to manage processing, mod, intent, semantic choice, register, cohesion, culture mediation, language assessment, turn-taking and equivalency as it relates to discourse.

(CRN 50283) CEAS 0900 Special Topics: Voicing (3 ch)
Thursday 6:00-8:00 pm - DeeLayne Roark-Raymer

Students will become comfortable and confident with their ability to comprehend American Sign Language and express an equivalent message in English. Students will discuss compression techniques as well as improve English language skills.

(CRN 50275) CEAS 0200 Art of Interpreting (3 ch)
Monday 6:00-8:00 pm - Holly Nelson

Students learn the process of interpreting bridging the gap between consecutive and simultaneous interpreting, ehthical issue discussions will be held as preparation for the NIC interview. Skills relating to working with a mentor will be discussed.

(CRN 50282) CEAS 0430 Deaf History and Culture (3 ch)

Interpreting requires being both bi-lingual and bi-culture. This course will expose students to local, national and world Deaf History and Culture being in the 1400s to the present day.
