Late Home run helps to Keep the Bruin Baseball Team Alive in Tournament Play

Carson City, NV. (May 7, 2009)— The #4 seeded Salt Lake Bruin’s Baseball Team defeated the #5 Eastern Utah Golden Eagles by a score of 8-7 after 10 innings of play, in an elimination game for the Bruins. In this win or go home game, Nelson Castleberry pitched in relief and ended up getting the win for Salt Lake. The Bruins have now won two tournament games.

Castleberry went 1.0 innings, striking out two and picking up the win for Salt Lake.

It was the offensive power of Ryan Bernal that created the win for SLCC. Bernal hit a walk-off, solo homerun in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Bruins a winning boost over the Eagles. SLCC needs to win all of their games in order to make it to the championship.

The Bruins face another elimination game against Southern Nevada tomorrow; May 8, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. SLCC won the last two games against the Coyotes when they each other in Salt Lake earlier this month.

Salt Lake Baseball Finishes the First Day of the Regional 18 Tournament with a Win.

Carson City, NV. (May 6 , 2009)— The Regional 18 Baseball Tournament started today, with the Bruin’s playing Eastern Utah in the second game of the tournament. Salt Lake came up a bit short against the Golden Eagles losing 4-3 despite a solid pitching performance from freshman Jeremy Atkinson.

Atkinson went 4.1 innings, striking out five and not allowing a run to score. Offensively the Bruins were lead by JR Roland. Roland finished 2 for 4 with a home run, his ninth of the season.

Picking up the loss against the Golden Eagles forced Salt Lake to play a second game today against Colorado Northwestern in this double-elimination tournament. SLCC went on to defeat the Spartans by a score of 6-4, behind the bats of Brandon Keller and Roland and the pitching of Nelson Castleberry.

Castleberry pitched a solid game going eight innings, and having a season-high 12 strikeouts. He didn’t allow a run while on the mound. Keller went 3 for 4 and Roland went 1 for 2.

Salt Lake takes to the field tomorrow again with their game starting at 4:00 p.m.

Salt Lake Plays Western Nevada tough Despite Sweep

Carson City, NV. (April 24-25, 2009)-- Salt Lake finishes the weekend with four losses despite playing tough against SWAC conference leader Western Nevada (38-14) by scores of 4 to 6, 1 to 3, 0 to 6 and 4 to 5 in eight innings.  The Bruins are now 21-29, 14- 24 in conference.

In game one's loss, Duncan Blades went 3 for 4 and JR Roland went 1 for 2, with a homerun.

In game two, Zane Gray picks up the loss, despite six solid inning and five strikeouts.

For game three Nelson Castleberry picked up the loss, going five innings and giving up two runs. He finished with five strikeouts.

For the game four loss, the Bruins had solid pitching and offense.  Starting pitcher Jeremy Atkinson went four innings, giving up three runs and five strikeouts. Adam Wilson came in relief for Atkinson, and picked up the loss striking out one and giving up two runs.

Offensively, JR Roland continued his solid weekend by hitting a three-run homerun in the sixth to tie the ball game.  That is Roland’s second homerun of the series.  Duncan Blades, like Roland also hit the ball well going 2 for 3 with two RBI’s.

Salt Lake concludes their regular season at home against the second place Southern Nevada on May 1-2, 2009.  The Bruins will be honoring their 2007-2008 Academic All-American as well as honoring their sophomores.  Friday’s first pitch starts at 1:00 p.m. and Saturday’s starts at 12:00 p.m.

Salt Lake and Eastern Utah Split the Series

Salt Lake City, UT. (April 18, 2009)— The Bruins Baseball team defeated Eastern Utah in game one by a score of 7-6 and lost game two 2-11. The Bruins are now 21-24 on the season. The Bruins and the Golden Eagles split the weekend series.

For game one, Jeremy Atkinson picked up the win. Offensively Ryan Bernal, JR Roland and Alex Exon all contributed towards the win. Bernal finished 2-3.  Roland was a perfect 3-3 and Exon went 2-3 for the game.

For game two Duncan Blades was the offense going 2-3. 

Salt Lake finishes the regular season with series against Western and Southern Nevada.  The last home series is May 1-2, 2009 versus Southern Nevada.

SLCC Baseball Takes One Win from Southern Idaho
 

Twin Falls, ID. (April 11, 2000)-- The Salt Lake Baseball Team finished up their series against Southern Idaho yesterday losing the first game 10-0 and winning the second one 10-4. The Bruins are now 12-15 in conference and 19-22 overall. 

For game two, Derek Christensen picks up his fourth win of the season.  He is now 4-3 on the year. Offensively, David Johnson was 2 for 4 with two RBI's and Duncan Blades went 3 for 4. Blades leads the team with 34 hits this season. Johnson picked up 20th and 21st RBI's on the season.  

The Bruins return to Cate Field on April 17-18th for a four game series against Eastern Utah. Friday's game starts at 1:00 p.m. on the Jordan Campus (9000 South and Bangater HWY.)

SLCC Baseball Drops the First Two Games to CSI

Twin Falls, ID. (April 10, 2009)— The Salt Lake Bruins Baseball team narrowly lost the first two games against Southern Idaho by scores of 5-3 and 3-2 after 10 innings.  With these losses the Bruins are now 18-20 and 11-15 on the season.

For game one, Brandon Keller and David Johnson both had two hits .

For game two, Stephen Nelson finished the game with two RBI’s.  Jeremy Atkinson pitched a solid game going 4.2 innings, 0 runs, and 4 strikeouts.

The Golden Eagles and the Bruins meet again tomorrow for two more games.  The Bruins look to split the series by winning both games to get back to .500 on the season and stay close to CSI for 3rd place in SWAC.

Salt Lake Takes the Series from Colorado Northwestern

Salt Lake City, UT. (April 5,2009) - The Salt Lake Bruins Baseball team defeated the Spartans of Colorado Northwestern by scores of 5-4 and 9-0, with these wins the Bruins move to .500 for the season at 18-18 overall. In conference play they are 11-13 and currently in fourth place behind Southern Idaho, Southern Nevada and the College of Western Nevada.

Picking up his fourth win of the season after pitching game one was Brett Nathan and picking up his second save of the season was Phil Lowe.

For game two, pitching a complete game for the Bruins was Derek Christensen.  He is now 3-3 on the year after today's win. Christensen threw the ball well and he had a season-high 10 strikeouts. 

The Bruins look to continue on the winning track and move up in the conference standings when they travel to Twin Falls, ID. to take on the 3rd place Eagles of Southern Idaho (13-11 in conference)

Salt Lake Baseball Bat's Come Alive.

Salt Lake City, UT. (April 4.2009) - The SLCC Baseball team started the day shoveling four inches of snow off their field in order to play the Spartans of Colorado Northwestern and they finished the day ending a nine game losing streak. The Bruins are now 16-18, 9-13 on the season. Salt Lake lost the first game 4-5 despite a late rally in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings, and won the second game after falling behind 2-0 early 16-6.

For game one Nelson Castleberry picked up the loss.  He went five innings and struck out five. Pitcher Zane Gray came in relief of Castleberry in the last two innings and threw well striking out four and giving up one hit. Offensively the Bruins did not get anything going until the fifth inning, thanks to a two run RBI double by catcher Felix Segovia to bring the Bruins within three.  Following Segovia, Nate Littlewood had a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it a one-run game.

It was game two that the bats started to come alive for Salt Lake. Catcher Alex Exon had three hits, Steven Nelson and David Johnson each had two hits and Ryan Bernal had two hits, including one home run and three RBI's.

While Colby Berg was the starting pitcher, Jeremy Atkinson picked up his third win of the season. He came in relief of Berg and had a solid pitching performance striking out five.

The Bruins and Spartans meet again tomorrow for a double header starting at 11 a.m.

Salt Lake Baseball drops the Series to Southern Nevada

Henderson, NV. (March 28, 2009)— The Salt Lake Baseball Team lost the final two games to Southern Nevada 6-8 and 1-2.  The Bruins are 14-17 on the year and 8-12 in conference play.

Contributing offensively for game one was JR Roland, Scott Shipley and Duncan Blades. Roland continued his solid hitting going 3-4 with two RBI’s and a triple. Shipley was perfect for the game going 3-3 and Blades 2-4 with two hits.

Game two featured a pitchers duel.  Bruin pitcher Derek Christensen came up a bit short despite a solid performance. He finished with six strike outs and one walk. Catcher Felix Segovia had the only RBI of game two in the first inning.

The Bruins return to action next week at home as they host Colorado Northwestern.  The first pitch will be thrown out on Friday at 1:00 p.m.

Salt Lake Baseball Comes Up Short.

Southern, NV. (March 27, 2009)— Salt Lake Baseball team lost 1-0 and 2-0 to Southern Nevada. SLCC falls to 15-15 on the season. The first two games of this series proved to be pitching duels between both schools with Salt Lake coming up a bit short.

For game one, Nelson Castleberry pitched 6 innings, had a solid six strikeouts and walked two. Offensively, outfielder JR Roland was 2-3 on the day with a  double.

For game two, starting Pitcher Colby Berg received the loss despite pitching a solid game. He went 6 innings.  Closer Adam Wilson came in the game to relieve Berg and finished with four strikeouts. Offensively the Bruins mustered three hits by Ryan Bernal, Stephen Nelson and Brandon Keller.

The Bruins look to take  today’s games when they face off with Southern Nevada again for more hits, and two wins.

SLCC Drops the Series to Western Nevada, Despite Better Performances

Salt Lake City, (March 21, 2009)- The Salt Lake Baseball team lost both games in today's double header against the Wildcats of Western Nevada by scores of 5-6, 8-6 after 11 innings of play.

For game one, the Bruins were down heading into the final two innings of play and staged a late comeback.  The Bruins had bases loaded and were only able to score two to make it a one-run ball game. 


For game two, the Bruins and Wildcats battled 11 innings before the Wildcats picked up the win. SLCC's bats finally came around scoring four runs in the bottom of fifth and sixth's innings and then tying the Wildcats in the bottom of the 10th. However, it was not enough to get the win.

Despite the loss, SLCC's Starting Pitcher Colby Berg threw a solid game. He pitched 5.1 innings, giving up 5 hits, 3 earned runs and striking out four. He left the top of the fifth inning with the win.  Also helping to keep the Bruins in the game was relief pitcher Nathan Brett. Brett threw 2.2 innings, giving up 4 hits and 1 earned run. He struck out two.

Offensively, Short Stop Duncan Blades continued to hit the ball well. For the game, he went 2-3, with 2 hits, 2 RBI's and 3 walks. He had a base hit in the bottom of the fifth to put the Bruins up by two. Also contributing was Center Fielder Troy Steele. Steele finished 2-5 with 1 hit, 2 hits and 1 RBI.

Salt Lake looks to get back on the winning track with a four game series against Southern Nevada next weekend at Cate Field. Friday's double header starts at 1:00 p.m.

SLCC Baseball Loses Two Tough Games

Salt Lake City, UT. (March 20, 2009)-- SLCC loses the first two games of a four game series to Western Nevada. The Bruins are now 15-11 on the season.  Three Bruin errors contributed towards the 4-0 loss in the first game.

SLCC managed two hits in the first game from Right Fielder JR Roland and Center Fielder Troy Steele. Western Nevada managed four runs on seven hits off of Bruin's Pitcher Nelson Castleberry. He pitched 7 innings, giving up 7 hits, 4 earned runs, 1 walk and 6 strike outs.

For the second game, SLCC lost 6-2.  Starting Bruin's Pitcher Jeremy Atkinson was credited with the loss.  He had a rough first inning giving up 3 runs, but settled down and pitched three shut-out innings.  Atkinson finished with 7 strikeouts on the day. Pitchers Phil Lowe, Tim Moore and Adam Wilson came in relief.  Lowe got out of a jam by striking out two. 

Offensively, Third Baseman Brandon Keller and Center Fielder Troy Steele contributed for Salt Lake. Keller ended with 1 hit, 1 RBI in 4 at bats and Steele ended with 1 hit, 1 run and 1 RBI in 2 at bats.

The Bruins are looking for a series split when they host Western Nevada for two more games tomorrow starting at 12:00 p.m.

Salt Lake Baseball's Offense Comes Alive against Dawson College

Salt Lake City, UT. (March 18, 2009)-- Salt Lake Baseball defeated Dawson College by a score of 11-2. SLCC played a lot of different players throughout the game for the win.

For the game, Salt Lake had 12 hits and 11 runs. Contributing offensively was Designated Hitter Ryan Bernal, Right Fielder JR Roland and 1st Baseman Scott Shipley. Bernal went 3 of 4 with 1 hit and had 2 RBI's off a two-run homerun. Roland went 2-3, with 3 RBI's, 2 hits and 2 Runs. Lastly, Shipley finished with 1 hit and 3 RBI's.

Picking up the win for the Bruins was Adam Wilson who came in relief for starting pitcher Nathan Brett. Wilson pitched 2 innings, giving up 2 hits, 1 run, 1 walk and 1 strike out.

The Bruins take to their home field again for a weekend series against Western Nevada. Friday starts at 1 and Saturday starts at 12.

The Bruins Baseball Team Takes Three of Four from Eastern Utah

Price, UT. (March 14, 2009)-- The Salt Lake Bruins Baseball team one won and lost one today in the final day of the weekend series between the Bruins and the Golden Eagles. The Bruins ended the weekend winning three out of the four.  SLCC won the first game of the double header today by a score of 10-8 and lost the final game 8-4. Salt Lake is now 13-9.

Getting the win for the Bruins in game one was Phil Lowe. He pitched 3 inning, and struck out three. Offensively three players led the Bruins to a win.  Duncan Blades was 3-5 with 2 RBI's, Ryan Bernal went 3-4 and JR Roland ended 2-2 with hitting his second home run of the year.

Despite the game two loss, several Bruins played well. David Johnson was 3-4 for the game and Nate Littlewood was 2-4 with one run.

The Bruins are back at home next to face Dawson Community College for a 9 inning game on Wednesday March 18, 2009 and then a four game series March 27-28 vs. Western Nevada at Cate Field. The first pitch is at 1:00 p.m. Friday and 12:00 p.m. Saturday

Price, UT. (March 13, 2009)— Salt Lake Baseball defeated the College of Eastern Utah (3-7, 10-14) by scores of 6-3 and 4-2.  With these two wins, the Bruins are now 13-8  and 7-3 overall.  They remain one game back of Southern Nevada in conference standings.

SLCC Baseball Splits the Series with The College of Southern Idaho

Salt Lake City, UT. (March 7, 2009) The Salt Lake Bruins Baseball team lost the second game of today's double header to the Golden Eagles of Southern Idaho by a score of 11-4.  With this loss, the Bruins are now 11-8 overall.

The Golden Eagles scored 10 runs in the top of the first inning and the Bruins could not overcome that deficit. On top of the 10 runs, SLCC had 4 errors for the game as well.

The Bruins finish the series 2-2 with the Golden Eagles. CSI moves to 10-8 on the season after this weekend of play.

Salt Lake travels to Price, Utah to take on the Eagles of Eastern Utah for a four game series March 13-14, 2009.

SLCC Baseball comes from behind to pick up Game Three Win against CSI.

Salt Lake City, UT. (March 7, 2009)- The Bruins patience paid off in the bottom of the seventh inning during the first game of the double header against CSI.

The Bruins came from a 3-1 deficit to defeat the Golden Eagles of Southern Idaho.  SLCC rallied in their last at bats to win the ballgame 4-3. With this win, Salt Lake is now 11-7. Picking up the win for the Bruins in relief was Colby Berg.

Contributing offensively towards the comeback was Bruin hitters Troy Steele, Matt Peay, Brandon Keller, JR Roland and Duncan Blades. Steele led off the bottom of the seventh with a single and had 2 hits for the game. Peay came up next and hit a single, advancing Steele to third base and then Keller's infield RBI hit advanced Steele home to make it a one-run ballgame at 3-2. Patient hitting by Roland to draw a walk made the Bruins have the bases loaded for short stop Duncan Blades. Blades was credited with an RBI when he got hit by a pitch to allow the tying run home. Littlewood also got hit by a pitch forcing the winning run home.

For the game, the Bruins had 7 hits, 4 runs and 1 error. The Bruins are currently playing their final game for the weekend against the Golden Eagles at Cate Field on the Jordan Campus.

SLCC Baseball Splits today’s Doubleheader with the College of Southern Idaho

Salt Lake City, UT. (March 6, 2009) The Salt Lake Bruins Baseball won the first game against the Golden Eagles of Southern Idaho (9-8, 2-3) in extra innings (10) by a score of 5-4, and lose the second game 7-3. The Bruins loaded the bases in the bottom of 10th and the CSI pitcher Jeroue walked in the winning run. The Bruins are now 9-7, 4-2 on the season.

Getting the first game win in relief of starting pitcher Stephen Castleberry was Adam Wilson. He pitched 3 innings and only gave up one walk and struck out 3 hitters. Castleberry gave up 6 hits, 3 earned runs, 6 walks and he struck out  8. 

Contributing offensively for the Bruins in game one was  Right Fielder JR Roland, Short Stop Duncan Blades and Designated Hitter Nate Littlewood. Roland finished with 2 hits, 2 RBI’s and 2 walks. Blades scored 2 runs on 1 RBI and he had 3 hits for the game.  Lastly, Littlewood had 2 hits in 3 at bats.

For the second game, the Bruins put up two runs in the bottom of the first with a 2 RBI single hit from catcher Alex Exon. Barrett the CSI pitcher settled down and threw 4.5 shut out innings.  It was not until the bottom of the sixth inning, that the Bruins got some offense thanks to a solo homerun by DH Felix Segovia.

The Bruins meet the College of Southern Idaho (9-8, 2-3) for two more games tomorrow, March 7, 2009 at Cate Field at the Jordan Campus.

SLCC Baseball Takes Three of Four from the Spartans

Rangley, CO. (February 28, 2009) The Salt Lake Bruins Baseball team beat Colorado Northwestern CC ( 5-12, 1-3) in both games of the double header today by scores of 5-1 and 8-0.  With the two wins, the Bruins are now 9-6, 3-1 on the season.

Getting the first game win in relief of starting pitcher Derek Christensen, was Phillip Lowe. He pitched 1 1/3 innings and had 2 strikeouts in relief.  Lowe picked up his first win of the season for the Bruins.  Christensen pitched 4 1/3 innings and had 9 strikeouts.

Contributing offensively for the Bruins in game one was Stephen Nelson, and Brandon Keller. Nelson went 3-3 and Keller went 1-3, with 2 RBIs. 

For the second game, pitcher Brett Nathan picked up his third win of the season (3-0.)  He went 5 innings and struck out six.  Zach McClesky came in relief and pitched a solid two innings.   Nelson continued his solid offense, going 2-4 on the game with 2 RBIs. 

The Bruins meet the College of Southern Idaho (8-8) for their first home stand of the season on March 6-7, 2009.  The Bruins take to the mound on Friday at 1:00 p.m and 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.

SLCC Baseball Splits with CNCC during today’s Doubleheader.

Rangley, CO. (February 27, 2009) The Salt Lake Bruins Baseball team beat Colorado Northwestern CC ( 5-10, 1-1) in the first game by a score of 7-2 and lost the second game 3-2. Salt Lake is now 7-6, 1-1 on the season.

Picking up the win for the Bruins was Nelson Castleberry, improving his record to 2-2 on the season. Castleberry finished the night with a season-high 9 strikeouts.  Offensively freshman Right Fielder JR Roland and Catcher Felix Segovia lead the team. Roland hit his first homerun of the season during the first game.  Segovia was 2 for 4 on the night, with 4 RBI’s. 

For the second game, the Bruins lost 3-2 despite the solid pitching of  Jeremy Atkinson. Atkinson pitched seven innings, and no earned runs.  Leading the Bruin offense in game two was sophomore 3rd baseman Brandon Keller. Keller had 2 RBI’s for the game.

The Bruins take to the field tomorrow for two more games against the Spartans of Colorado Northwestern.  The first pitch starts at 12:00 p.m.

SLCC Baseball splits their last two games in Las Vegas.

Las Vegas, NV. (February 21, 2009) The Salt Lake CC Baseball lost one to #10 Cypress College by a score of 9-2 and beat #15 Chaffey Community College by a score of 9-7.  The Bruins are now 6-5 on the season. 

Picking up the win against Chaffey College was Derek Christensen (2-1) on the season. He pitched 6 innings, and struck out seven. Closer Phil Lowe picked up his first save of the season. 

Offensively the Bruins had contributions from infielder Duncan Blades and catcher Felix Segovia.  Blades went 1-3 hitting a homerun and Segovia was 2-4 adding another homerun as well.

The Bruins travel to Rangley, Colorado to being conference play for a double-header series against Colorado Northwestern CC (4-6).  The Bruins take to the field starting at 1 p.m. Friday and 12:00 p.m. Saturday.

SLCC Baseball Came Up Short against the #6 Team in the Nation.

Las Vegas, NV. (February 20, 2009) The Salt Lake CC Baseball team lost 4-1 to #6 Miami Dade College.  The Bruins are now 5-4 on the season. 

Despite the loss, the Bruin pitching staff threw the ball well.  Nelson Castleberry went 6 innings and struck out five.  Freshman relief pitcher Adam Wilson came in and threw one scoreless inning, and recorded two strikeouts.

Offensively, the Bruins had contributions from Troy Steel and David Johnson. Steel went 3-4 on the night and Johnson went 2-4 on the night.  One of his two hits was a double.

The Bruins play at double-header tomorrow at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. in Las Vegas.

Bruins Pick Up their First Sweep of the Year.
St. George, UT. (February 13, 2009)-- Salt Lake Community College's (5-3) baseball team picks up it's first sweep of the year against Weber State, winning 10-0, 10-6, and 12-2. 

Jeremy Atkinson was the winning pitcher for the Bruins in game one. Offensively Nate Littlewood went 3-3 for the game and had 4 RBI's. 

For game two, Brett Mason and Adam Wilson pitched well for the Bruins. Wilson ended with the win pitching three innings in relief, striking out one. Offensively, Dave Johnson continued his solid offense with 2 RBI's. 

Game three was won by Derek Christensen.  Contributing offensively for the Bruins during this game was JR Roland and Duncan Blade.  Roland was 1-1, and 2 RBI's while Blade went 2-2 with 2 RBI's.

According to D.G. Nelson the team is starting to get better swings, which is leading to more hits and runs.

The offense looks to pick up where they left off in their next series.

Bruins Win First Game of Four against Weber State

St. George, UT. (Febrauary 12, 2009)--Salt Lake Community College's (2-3) baseball team wins it second game of the year against Weber State, by a score of 13-3 in St. George. Nelson Castleberry was the winning pitcher for the Bruins giving up 2 earned runs in 5 innings. The bullpen kept the Cats off the scoreboard in final two innings.

Offensively Ryan Bernal and Dave Johnson lead the Bruin offense. Bernel went 2 for 2 with a double and a triple and 3 RBIs on the night. Johnson went 2-3 and 3 RBIs as well.

SLCC Baseball splits their last two games in Las Vegas.

LAS VEGAS (January 31, 2009)- The Salt Lake CC Baseball (1-3)  lost their first game of the morning 8-1 to Central Arizona and won the second game 5-0 against Gateway College. 

On the weekend, infielders Nate Littlewood and Ryan Bernal both had 4 hits. Littlewood drove in 3 of the 5 runs in the win against Gateway.

On the pitching side Brett Nathan got the first win of the season for the Bruins.  Nathan is now 1-0 on the season.  Relief Pitchers Adam Wilson and Phillip Lowe each played and helped to preserve the shutout by Nathan.

SLCC looks to continue to improve and put their offense and defense together together in the next series against Weber State.

 The Bruins start off the season with two losses.

Las Vegas, NV. (January 30, 2009) The Bruin Baseball team opened up the 2009 season with two losses to Yavapai, losing 12-1 and 9-5. The Bruins are 0-2 on the season.

During the first game, the team showed a lot of rust after having time away from the baseball diamond according to Coach DG Nelson. Despite the loss of the second game, the team began to hit and pitch a lot better.

The Bruins look for their first win of the 2009 season tomorrow during the conclusion of the Las Vegas Tournament when they play Central Arizona at 8 a.m. and Gateway at 11:30 p.m.
