Baseball Losses Two; Finishes Third at Tournament
SALT LAKE CITY (May 12, 2008) – The Salt Lake CC Men’s Baseball team finished their year with two losses (5-1, 11-1) in the Region 18 Tournament.  Kyle Bubak was named SWAC Defensive Player of the Year; Scott Manning, Sean Moysh and Adam Gunn were all named first team all region.  Ryan Bernal was named second team all region.  Their season ends with a record of 39-20 and a third place finish in the SWAC regular season.

In the semifinal matchup against number one seed Southern Nevada; Salt Lake took a tie game into the sixth before falling behind.  Salt Lake starter Preston Grimes pitched six innings allowing four runs.  The bats never heated up for the Bruins only managing four hits and leaving nine runners on base.

Following the loss Salt Lake had to regroup to play Western Nevada in the loser’s bracket.  Western jumped to an early one run lead but once again the Salt Lake bats were quiet with five hits in the game.  Kyle Bubak was 2-4 with a double and scored Salt Lake’s only run.  Payton Rentmeister got the loss going 4.1 innings allowing two earned runs.

Salt Lake CC Baseball Upsets #2 Western Nevada
HENDERSON, NV (May 8, 2008) – The Salt Lake Community College Bruin Baseball team defeated the number two seed Western Nevada today 7-2.  Adam Gunn gets the win for Salt Lake and Shay Star drove in two runs at the plate.  Salt Lake will wait for the winner between number one seed Southern Nevada and number four seed Southern Idaho.  The semifinal match up will take place on Friday at 4 pm in Henderson, Nevada.

Salt Lake CC Baseball Opens Tournament with a Win
HENDERSON, NV (May 7, 2008) – Chad Ellis pitched seven complete innings in the 8-1 win for Salt Lake over Colorado Northwestern.  Ryan Bernal hit a three run home run to extend Salt Lake’s lead and Ellis took care of the rest.  Salt Lake (34-6) plays Western Nevada College today at 1 pm the winner will move on to play at 4 pm on Friday and the loser will play again today against Colorado Northwestern.

Salt Lake CC Baseball Wins Two

SALT LAKE CITY (May 2, 2008) – Salt Lake CC Baseball took two games from Colorado Northwestern today 6-2 and 9-2.  Salt Lake’s record is now 33-6 overall and 25-11 in SWAC play.  Salt Lake and Colorado Northwestern meet again for another double-header beginning at noon at Cate Field.

Salt Lake Baseball Losses Two
HENDERSON, Nevada (April 25, 2008) - The Salt Lake Community College baseball team dropped two games today to College of Southern Nevada 5-1 and 10-2.  The losses bring their record to 31-6 overall and 23-11 in the SWAC.  Salt Lake is now one game behind Southern Nevada for first place in the SWAC.

Both teams meet again tomorrow for a double header starting at noon (PST).

The Bruins Ready for Southern Nevada
SALT LAKE CITY (April 22, 2008) – The Salt Lake CC Baseball team took two games from Weber State 9-1 and 13-10.  The non-conference wins takes Salt Lake’s record to 33-14 overall with an important four game series against Southern Nevada this weekend.

Kyle Bubak finished 3-3 with a triple to lead Salt Lake in the first game.  Sean Moysh blasted a line-drive home run to finish 2-4 and Shay Star was on base three times with two RBI’s and two swiped bases.  In the second game Salt Lake jumped out to a 10-1 lead before Weber fought back to get with in four runs however Salt Lake kept the bats hot plating 13 runs.  Shay Star stayed hot going 2-3 with an RBI and Ryan Bernal was 2-3 with a two RBI double.

Salt Lake (33-14, 23-9 SWAC) hits the road for a four game series with second place Southern Nevada.  Southern is one game behind Salt Lake for the conference lead.  Salt Lake needs to win two of the four games to maintain their conference lead and earn the rights to host the Regional Tournament.

Western Nevada sweeps Salt Lake Baseball
CARSON CITY, Nevada (April 19, 2008) - The Salt Lake Community College Baseball team was swept by Western Nevada today 1-0 and 10-8.  After a 15-inning game yesterday Salt Lake looked to rebound however Western Nevada had other ideas.  Salt Lake takes their record to 31-14 overall and 23-9 in Scenic West play.  Salt Lake remains in first place by one game over Western Nevada.

Salt Lake (31-14, 23-9) returns home for a nine-inning game against Weber State on April 22nd at Cate Field and then heads on the road again to face a tough Southern Nevada team in Henderson, NV.

Baseball Loses In 15 Innings
CARSON CITY, Nevada (April 18, 2008) - Salt Lake CC baseball loses two games today to Western Nevada College today 7-4 and 7-6 in 15 innings.  Salt Lake's remains in first place with the losses and takes their record to 31-12 and 23-7.

Salt Lake and Western Nevada battle each other again in a double-header beginning at noon.

Bruin Baseball Sweeps Behind Strong Pitching
PRICE, Utah (April 12, 2008) – The Salt Lake CC Bruin Baseball team completed the sweep of College of Eastern Utah with 4-1 and 5-1 wins.  Salt Lake stays atop the SWAC with a 32-10 record and 23-5 in conference play.

Adam Dunn got the start for Salt Lake going five strong innings allowing no runs, Todd Morlock threw one perfect inning and David McKnight picks up the save.  Payton Rentmister started the second game going five innings allowing no earned runs before giving way to Preston Grimes to close the game. Shortstop Kyle Bubak finished 4-4 with a two RBI double to led Salt Lake at the plate.

Salt Lake (32-10, 23-5) plays Weber State on April 15th at Cate Field before heading back on the road to face Western Nevada in a tough four game series.

Baseball Takes Two from CEU
PRICE, Utah (April 11, 2008) – The Salt Lake Community College Baseball team took two games from College of Eastern Utah today 8-5 and 11-3.  With the wins Salt Lake remains in first place with a record of 30-10 overall and 21-5 in SWAC play.

Chad Ellis threw six innings allowing no earned runs to get the win 8-5 for Salt Lake.  Sean Moysh was 2-4 with two RBI’s and Cam Smith was 2-4 with three RBI’s.  In game two Conor Dwyer threw six innings allowing two runs.  Salt Lake fell down two runs early but answered winning easily 11-3.

Salt Lake CC (30-10, 21-5) and Eastern Utah finish the four game series with a double header tomorrow starting at noon.

Baseball Recovers and Splits the Weekend
TWIN FALLS, Idaho (April 5, 2008) -Salt Lake CC Baseball splits the weekend with College of Southern Idaho winning two today 3-2 and 6-1.  Their record stands at 28-10 and 19-5 in SWAC play. 

Game one was a close 3-2 win for Salt Lake.  Brandon Keller was 2-2 with and RBI and Scott Manning went 3-3 also with an RBI.  Adam Dunn gets the win going 6 2/3 innings and David McKnight gets the save. 

The sixth inning was the key in game two with Salt Lake scoring all six runs in the sixth.  Payton Rentmister threw four innings allowing one hit and Preston Grimes threw three innings allowing one earned runs.

Salt Lake keeps their two game lead for first place over Southern Nevada.  Salt Lake CC (28-10, 19-5) will head to Price to face Eastern Utah in a four game series on April 11th and 12th.

SLCC Baseball Falls in Two Close Games
TWIN FALLS, Idaho (April 4, 2008) - Salt Lake Community College baseball drops two games to College of Southern Idaho today in Twin Falls.  Salt Lake's record is now 26-10 overall and 17-5 in Scenic West play.

Game one was a tough 1-0 loss with CSI scoring in the bottom of the seventh.  Cam Smith was 2-2 and Chad Ellis pitched a strong six innings in the loss.  The second game was another tough 2-0 loss with the two runs being unearned runs.  Coner Dwyer takes the loss for Salt Lake throwing complete five innings.

Salt Lake (26-10, 17-5 SWAC) and Southern Idaho meet again tomorrow for a double header starting at Noon.

Baseball Sweeps CNCC
RANGLEY, Colorado (March 29, 2008) - Salt Lake Community College Baseball made it a four game sweep of Colorado Northwestern today winning both games 2-1 and 10-4.  In game one Adam Gunn pitched a complete game allowing no earned runs and striking out 11 Colorado batters.  In game two Salt Lake brought the bats shutting the door on a Colorado rally.  Salt Lake stays in first place in the SWAC with a 26-8 record overall and 17-3 in conference play.

Salt Lake stays on the road for a four game set with the Golden Eagles of Southern Idaho on April 4th and 5th in Twin Falls.

Baseball Wins Two
RANGLEY, Colorado (March 28, 2008) - Salt Lake Community College Bruins Baseball takes the first two games from Colorado Northwestern Spartans 7-1 and 11-4.  The Bruins remain in first place in the SWAC with a record of 23-8 overall and 15-3 in the SWAC.   Chad Ellis picks up the win in the first game taking his record to 6-1 on the year.  Salt Lake hitters Cam Smith and Scott Manning both connected on home runs to help push the Bruins past Colorado.  Payton Rentmister started the second game getting his third win of the season.

Salt Lake and Colorado face off again tomorrow for a two game set beginning at noon.

Baseball Splits with Southern Nevada
SALT LAKE CITY (March 22, 2008) – Salt Lake Community College Baseball won the first game 2-1 and lost the second 5-2 to College of Southern Nevada.  Salt Lake (21-8, 13-3 SWAC) maintains their two game lead for first place over Southern Nevada.

Adam Gunn pitched a complete game for Salt Lake to get the 2-1 win.  Ryan Bernal hit a two RBI’s double in the sixth to put Salt Lake on top.  In game two Southern Nevada blasted a grand slam in the fifth to put the game out of reach winning 5-2.

SLCC Baseball Splits Day One
SALT LAKE CITY (March 21, 2008) – Salt Lake CC Baseball (20-7, 12-2 SWAC) won game one in a 15-11 slug fest and lost game two 9-0 to College of Southern Nevada.  In game two Nevada’s pitchers took a no hitter into the seventh before a Bruin single to break it up.

These two teams will take the field again tomorrow for a two game set at Cate Field first pitch Noon.

Baseball Wins Easily

SALT LAKE CITY (March 18, 2008) – Salt Lake CC Baseball defeated Dawson Community College today 6-3.  The win takes Salt Lake’s record to 19-6 on the year.  CJ Crowther gets to win and David McKnight picks up another save.  Felix Segovia goes 3-3 at the plate for the Bruins.

Salt Lake (19-6, 11-1 SWAC) takes on conference foe Southern Nevada (20-7, 9-3 SWAC) this weekend at Cate Field. Nevada is two games behind Salt Lake and the Bruins want to keep it that way.  Friday’s games set to begin at 1 pm.

Baseball Takes Three of Four

SALT LAKE CITY (March 15, 2008) – Salt Lake CC Baseball (18-6, 11-1 SWAC) took two from Western Nevada College today at Cate Field.  Game one was a close 2-1win for Salt Lake with Adam Gunn getting the win and David McKnight getting the save.  Josh Chevalier hit a double to get into scoring position and Shay Star drove in the run go ahead. 

The second game was a 9-0 five-inning snow shortened game.  Payton Rentmeister gets the win allowing no earned runs.  Josh Chevalier goes 2-2 with three RBI’s and Drew Oldfield finished 2-3 with three RBI’s.

Salt Lake CC faces Dawson College on Tuesday March 18th at 3 pm and remains on the home stand taking on Southern Nevada College March 21st and 22nd.

Baseball Splits with Western Nevada

SALT LAKE CITY (March 14, 2008) – Salt Lake CC Baseball splits the double header today against Western Nevada College.  This brings Salt Lake’s record to 16-6 overall and 9-1 in the SWAC.   Salt Lake took the first game 3-2; Todd Morlock gets the win for Salt Lake.   In the second game Salt Lake faced a tough Western pitching staff that held the Bruins to one run, losing 6-1.

Salt Lake (16-6, 9-1 SWAC) and Western Nevada (11-12, 5-5 SWAC) face off again tomorrow at Cate Field first pitch scheduled for noon.

Salt Lake Baseball Sweeps
SALT LAKE CITY (March 8, 2008) - Salt Lake CC Baseball takes four games from College of Eastern Utah.  These four wins brings Salt Lake's record to 15-5 overall and 8-0 in the SWAC.

Game one was a 9-1 win for Salt Lake with Chad Ellis picking up the win.  Josh Chevalier finished 2-3 with two RBI's and Scott Manning drove in two runs.  Game two was a tight 2-1 win for Salt Lake.  In the eighth inning with Salt Lake trailing 1-0, Sean Moysh drove in the tying run and Cam Smith hit Moysh in for the winning run.  Todd Morlock gets the win for Salt Lake.

Saturday's game three and four were 10-0 and 9-1 wins.  Game three was a 0-0 ball game till the fourth inning when Salt Lake opened up the scoring with nine runs.  Felix Segovia and Scott Manning were both 2-3 with two RBI's.  Adam Gunn picks up the win striking out five hitters.  In the final game Payton Rentmeister gets the win and Preston Grimes pitched two scoreless innings.

Baseball Sweeps CSI in Home Opener

SALT LAKE CITY (March 1, 2008) - Salt Lake CC Baseball (11-5, 4-0 SWAC) sweeps the weekend taking four games from College of Southern Idaho.  Game one was a 7-3 win with Adam Gunn striking out five and Preston Grimes going three innings with 4 strikeouts.  Shay Star hit a RBI double, Sean Moysh hit a RBI triple and Ryan Bernal was 2-3 with three RBI's.  Game two was a 10-5 win for Salt Lake.  Ryan Bernal went 3-3 missing a cycle by a home run.  In the fourth Salt Lake hit three triples in a row to open up the game.

Salt Lake (11-5, 4-0) takes on College of Eastern Utah next weekend at Cate Field on March 7th and 8th.

Baseball Wins SWAC Home Opener
SALT LAKE CITY (February 29, 2008) - Salt Lake CC (9-5, 2-0 SWAC) baseball takes two from College of Southern Idaho today at Cate Field.  The first game was a 3-0 win; Chad Ellis pitched a complete game with six strikeouts.  Ryan Bernal went 3-3 with an RBI and Josh Chevalier was 1-3 with an RBI.

In the second game Conor Dwyer pitched six innings striking out five and David McKnight got the save in the 3-2 win for Salt Lake.  Sean Moysh hit a two RBI go-ahead triple in the fifth to put Salt Lake up for good.

Salt Lake (9-5, 2-0) takes on CSI again tomorrow at Cate Field first pitch set for noon.

Baseball Evens Record at 5-5

SALT LAKE CITY (February 20, 2008) - Salt Lake CC Baseball (5-5) went 3-1 in Las Vegas over the weekend.  Their first game a 7-1 win came against College of Eastern Utah, Chad Ellis got the win and David McKnight got the save.  In the second game Salt Lake faced undefeated Cypress College.  Adam Gunn pitched six innings striking out six and David McKnight got another save in as many games.  Cameron Smith was 2-4 with a 2 run double and a solo homerun.  The third game against El Paso College was a tight one coming down to the ninth inning.  Salt Lake came out on top with a 6-3 win, scoring three runs in the ninth with two outs.  The final game of the four game series was a tough 11-4 loss in 11 innings of play.

Salt Lake opens home play on Wednesday, February 20 against Weber State and heads to Southern Idaho at the end of the month.

Salt Lake Struggles on the Road

SALT LAKE CITY (February 8, 2008)- Salt Lake CC Men’s Baseball traveled down to Prescott Arizona for a three game set with Yavapai College.  They finished the weekend with three tough losses bringing their record to 2-4 on the young season.  Game one was an 8-1 loss with Cameron Smith going 2-3 at the plate with a double and a triple.  In game two, a 5-3 loss, Scott Manning went 2-4 with 2 RBI’s and a stolen base.  Adam Gunn came in relief and pitched 3 strong innings striking out 7 of the 9 batters faced.  The final game was a 13-12 loss to Yavapai.  Cameron Smith and Sean Moysh were hot at the plate.  Smith went 3-4 with a double, triple and 4 RBI’s and Moysh connected on 3 hits in 4 at bats with a double.  On the weekend catcher Drew Oldfield threw out 5 of 6 base runners.

Salt Lake CC (2-4) heads to Las Vegas to face El Paso, Cypress, Maimi and Santa Anna on February15-17.  Then returns home for there first home game against Weber State on February 19 at Cate Field.

Salt Lake CC Pulls Out 4-3 Win
LAS VEGAS (January 26, 2008)- With the bases loaded in a 3-3 tie, in the bottom of the ninth Drew Oldfield drove in the winning run to secure a 4-3 win for Salt Lake CC (2-1).  Preston Grimes threw 3 1/3 innings of shutout baseball with six strikeouts to earn the win for Salt Lake.  In the top of the ninth Kyle Bubak led off with a single and Sean Moysh connected on a double to score the tying run.

Salt Lake CC (2-1) heads down to Prescott, Arizona February 4th and 5th to face Yavapai College.

SLCC Baseball Opens 2008 Season with a Win
LAS VEGAS (January 25, 2008)- The Salt Lake CC Baseball (1-0) opened up the 2008 season with an 11-8 win against Gateway College.  Brandon Keller smacked a triple to score three runs and Ryan Bernal also connected on a triple to score three.  Zack McClesky pitched three scoreless innings giving up one unearned run to secure the win for Salt Lake.

In the nightcap Salt Lake (1-1) fell to Cochise College 10-3.  Chad Ellis pitched 6 1/3 strong innings with 8 strikeouts and no earned runs.  Kyle Bubak blasted a solo home run and Ryan Bernal and Cameron Smith both recorded an RBI.

Salt Lake takes on Gateway College Saturday night at 7pm.

Salt Lake CC Baseball Player Named to Rawlings Gold Glove Team
SALT LAKE CITY (November 6, 2007)- Salt Lake CC is proud to announce that Zackary Swasey was named to the 2007 Rawlings Gold Glove Team.  This award is given out to the top nine fielders in NJCAA Division One.  Swasey is one of three outfielders to receive the award.  He had a fielding percentage of .986 committing only one error all season long.  Zackary is currently serving and LDS mission.

This is the first year that the Rawling Gold Glove is being given out at a Collegiate and High School levels.  The Gold Glove is given out to the top nine defensive players at each level.  This award is a standard in the Major Leagues for outstanding defensive players.



Salt Lake Welcomes New Assistant Coaches Waddoups and Downs

Salt Lake City (August 24, 2007) - Salt Lake Community College Head Baseball Coach DG Nelson and Athletic Director Norma Carr have announced the addition of Derek Waddoups as assistant baseball coach. Waddoups replaces outgoing assistant coach Tony Pezely. Also joining the Bruin staff as a volunteer coach is Kelly Downs, former Major League pitcher.

"Derek brings to Salt Lake CC some baseball experience and knowledge from both within and outside Utah.  He will give the Bruin program a good perspective and dedication,” said Carr.

A native of Roy, Utah, Waddoups joins the Bruins after one season as the pitching coach and first base coach for the University of Texas at Brownsville Scorpions. Prior to that, he served as the assistant baseball coach at his alma mater, Bellevue University, in Bellevue, Neb. for two years.

His coaching resume also includes stints as a catching camp instructor at BYU, pitching coach of the Northwest Collegiate League Wisconsin Woodchucks, and camp hitting and pitching instructor at UVSC. Waddoups played baseball on the collegiate level at the College of Eastern Utah before finishing his career at Bellevue.

Downs spent eight years pitching in the Majors, six as a San Francisco Giant and two years as an Oakland Athletic from 1986-1993.
