Head Coach Norm Parrish After 15 seasons as the head coach of the Salt Lake Bruins, Norm Parrish has established one of the top junior college basketball programs around. He has averaged just under 21 wins per season at Salt Lake. In 1994, the Bruins captured the Region 18 tournament title and finished 5th at the NJCAA National Tournament. Parrish led the Bruins to the 2000 Scenic West Athletic Conference regular season championship. Over 180 players have worn the Bruins uniform under Coach Parrish since he became the head coach in 1991, and moved on to four-year schools. Sixty eight of those have moved on to the NCAA Division I ranks, with several now playing professionally overseas as well as in the NBA. During his tenure, seven players have been named NJCAA All-Americans, and thirteen have been Academic All-Americans. Coach Parrish has recruited and coached players from all over the United States and many foreign countries including Greece, England, Turkey, Australia, Switzerland, Brazil, Russia, Serbia, and the West African countries of Senegal, Cameroon, and Ivory Coast. Returned missionaries are also an integral part of Coach Parrish’s recruiting process. “The returned missionaries have a unique perspective on life and a level of maturity that is advantageous. The only down side is that it sometimes may take a while for them to get back into top playing shape.” Prior to coming to Salt Lake, Coach Parrish was an assistant to the late Lynn Archibald at the University of Utah in 1988-89. Also on the Utah staff that year were current Stanford head coach Trent Johnson and Southern Miss head coach Larry Eustachy. Prior to Utah, he was an assistant at Nampa HS (ID). Parrish was a standout player at Ricks College and Northwest Nazarene College. When not in the gym, Norm and his wife Kaye spend time in the outdoors with their three sons Travis (16), Matt (13), and Collin (9). The boys are involved in football, basketball, and baseball. |
