Mary Kay AmiconeHead Coach
MaryKay Amicone

    Coach MaryKay Amicone is fired up for her fourth season as the head coach of the Salt Lake CC softball program.  Last year she led Salt Lake to a SWAC title her second in three years.  Salt Lake finished with a 36-18-2 overall record and a 28-12 SWAC record.  Along with a very successful season the 2007 team also broke many of the individual records both offensive and defensive.  Coach Amicone’s infields have improved every year and compete for the top fielding percentage in the SWAC.  The 2007 team finished with a .954 fielding percentage tops in the conference.  Academically Salt Lake finished in the top 15 nationally with a 3.45 GPA.  Salt Lake had five Distinguished NJCAA All Americans Megan Staley, Cara Wright, Nikki Smith, Bonnie Muir and Megan Eliason. 

   In her first season with the Bruins, Coach Amicone guided her talented team to the regular season SWAC Conference Championship and a second place finish in the Region 18 Championship. The Bruins finished the year with an overall record of 45-7 and a SWAC record of 37-3. Coach Amicone was also named the SWAC Coach of the Year in 2005. Season number two resulted in a 2nd place SWAC finish while the Bruins fell just short of a Region 18 Championship.  Coach Amicone’s over all record stands at 109-49-3.  She has sent numerous players on to the Division One level, recently Bonnie Muir (University of Utah) and Shelly Manual (Utah Valley University).    

   MaryKay began her coaching career at the U of U and was an assistant coach on the hill for seven years. She left the University of Utah and was hired as the head softball coach at BYU. Mary Kay proved herself by coaching BYU to a conference championship and was named “Mountain West Conference Softball Coach of the Year” in 2001.

   MaryKay is familiar to Salt Lake CC’s program as she was employed as head softball coach in 1999, but decided to take the job offer at BYU instead. She started her intercollegiate softball career at Weber State College and then transferred to the University of Utah to finish her softball eligibility and obtain her bachelor degree in elementary education.

   She is married to Marc Amicone, the general manager of the Triple A Salt Lake Bees baseball team and they have two sons, Trevor (20) who is currently serving an LDS Mission in Boston and Derek (18) a senior at Jordan High School.  MaryKay and her family currently reside in Sandy, Utah with her beloved dog Patch.

Kate Nygaard Assistant Coach Kate Nygaard

     Coach Kate Nygaard enters her third season as the Assistant Coach at Salt Lake CC.  Kate’s responsibilities include pitchers, catchers, hitting and all the Salt Lake CC Camps/Clinic duties.  Under her guidance in 2007 the pitching staff broke the single season strikeout record for Salt Lake with 315 combined.  The pitching staff finished with a 33-15 record and a 3.40 ERA.   Offensively Salt Lake hitters finished with a .317 average and an On Base percentage of .386. Begging in 2007 Kate now handle all the Sports and Information duties for the Athletic Department

   An All-Region and All-American player for Salt Lake CC under Coach Amy Houge, Kate transferred to the University of Utah to finish softball eligibility.  Shortly after graduating from the University of Utah Kate became the assistant at Salt Lake CC.  Kate still holds the home run and RBI records at Salt Lake and hit 13 home runs while at the University of Utah.  Kate graduated 2005 with a degree in Sociology from the University of Utah and currently resides in Draper, Utah. 

Jamie SwensenAssistant Coach Jamie Swensen

     Coach “Swens” begins her second season as the outfield and slapping coach at Salt Lake CC.  Under her tutelage the outfield at Salt Lake has been one of the best in the SWAC.  Swen’s duties at Salt Lake also include all travel and hotel reservations.  In 2006 Swens spent a year Scottsbluff, Nebraska where she assumed the roles of Assistant Softball Coach as well as Assistant Resident Director. During her brief stay in Nebraska, Coach Swens helped lead the Cougars to their highest finish in school history as Region 9 runner-ups.

    Swenson began her collegiate career as a Salt Lake Bruin, earning Academic All-Conference Honors each year. After playing at SLCC she transferred to Adams State College, located in Colorado. Where in 2005 she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Physiology & Leisure Science with an emphasis in Sports Management.  Swens lives in Murray, Utah.
