Jean was born and raised in Virginia, and moved to Minnesota for her undergraduate education at Carleton College. While there, she worked in a yeast genetics lab, first as an undergrad, and then as a technician after graduation. She moved to Utah in 2001 to enroll in the Molecular Biology program at the University of Utah. There, she studied stress resistance in uropathogenic
Escherichia coli in the Department of Pathology. Jean received her doctorate in 2007, and then began teaching for the Biology Department at the U of U. She joined SLCC Biotechnology in 2009.
