Commencement Regalia (Cap and Gown) and Related Items

All participants dress for Commencement according to traditions instituted in the world’s oldest universities. The regalia worn by faculty members signifies the various degrees, disciplines, and institutions of the members of the academic procession and is an outward sign of membership in the academic community. The regalia worn by graduates signifies the responsibility of the new graduates to uphold the ideals of higher education: freedom of inquiry, the pursuit of truth, the open exchange of knowledge, and tolerance of alternative views. These rights and responsibilities are conferred upon the graduates by the President of the College during the Commencement ceremony.

SLCC graduates wear a black gown and black mortarboard (cap) with a blue and gold tassel. Gowns should be worn closed. The tassel should be attached to the center of the mortarboard and worn hanging on the left side of the face.

Graduates must wear shoes. Under the robe, business casual to dressy attire is most appropriate.

Participants should not remove their mortarboards at any time during the ceremony.

Commencement regalia (cap, gown, stole, etc.) may be purchased in the College Stores at Taylorsville Redwood Campus, South City Campus and Jordan Campus beginning March 21. Students planning to walk in the Commencement Ceremony must RSVP at the Graduation Website by May 3. The cost for cap and gown will be $22.00.

Honor Cords Students achieving a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher by Fall 2016 will earn an Honor Cord. Cords may be picked up in the College Store at Taylorsville Redwood Campus, South City Campus and Jordan Campus during regular business hours from March 21 through May 4.

Note: School of Applied Technology & Technical Specialties competency-based certificate programs are not eligible for honor cords.
