Transferring to a 4-Year Institution

Admission into a major program at a transfer institution depends upon the receiving institution’s requirements for that major. Some major programs are restricted and require special application as well as a competitive GPA. See an Academic Advisor at both SLCC and the intended receiving institution for specific articulation information, also available at the Utah System of Higher Education web site: http://www.utahsbr.edu/html/student_info.html.

The University of Utah applies any four SLCC Communication classes toward major requirements.  This is in addition to those courses that have formal articulation between SLCC and University of Utah.  In addition, you can have your transcript individually evaluated by Professor Norm Elliott at the University of Utah to see if other classes will be accepted.  Contact Professor Elliott at 801-581-4377 or by email at elliott@communication.utah.edu.  See the more information below about transferring to the University of Utah.

Utah State University (Speech and Journalism) Communication department applies three SLCC Communication courses toward major requirements.  More courses may be counted based on existing articulation agreements.

Dixie State College applies the majority of SLCC Communication classes toward the major requirements.

Are you transferring to the University of Utah in Communication?
This information is for students studying Communication at SLCC and that would like to transfer to be a Communication major at the University of Utah. Communication faculty at SLCC have worked out a cooperative agreement with Communication Department at the University of Utah.

This agreement offers great benefits for SLCC Communication students, and it is really easy to do. The benefits of this agreement allow students to automatically transfer into the University of Utah's Communication Department as declared majors. In addition, SLCC Communication majors get higher priority for enrollment, along with other perks.

Without this agreement, transfer students must take 9 credit hours at the University of Utah before even applying to their Department.   In addition, this will delay the completion of your degree at the University of Utah.

Here's what you need to do:
• Earn a Communication degree at SLCC
• Earn at 3.2 GPA (cumulative or COMM class cumulative, either way), and
• Complete the one credit-hour class, TIG (Transfer Interest Group), COMM 3060, offered by the U COMM Dept. and taught by Dr Norm Elliott. This class is taught in the fall at the University of Utah, and in the spring at the SLCC Redwood campus. Reduced tuition is available for SLCC students. You need not apply to the University of Utah before taking COMM 3060.

Complete these three simple steps and you are automatically transferred into the University of Utah Communication Department as a declared major and are on your way to completing a Bachelor's Degree.
