Placement Testing

Math, English, and Other Courses

Qualifying Accuplacer Test (CPT), SAT scores, or American College Test (ACT) scores must be submitted by the student to the instructor at the beginning of the course. (Students who have completed a math course prerequisite with a grade of “C” or higher within one year may register for the next level math course without taking the placement test.) Instructors submit a copy of ACT math or English placement scores directly to the CE Office the first week of class. A high school transcript copy is sufficient. Students who cannot show a qualifying placement score to the instructor at the beginning of the class cannot remain in the class.

A registration block is in place for math, English, and certain other courses that prevents the registration of students who do not have the required test scores. For a detailed list of requirements and pre-requisites for each course, see “Courses Available for Credit, 2009-2010” under “Prerequisites and/or Requirements.” Notice that some classes require both a reading and math score.

UBSCT (Utah Basic Skills Competency Test) Scores

UBSCT reading scores received and input by SLCC may be used in place of Accuplacer, ACT, or SAT reading scores for the following courses: Chemistry, COMM 1010 & 1020, ECON 1010, ENVT 1010, GEO 1010, GEOG 1300, HUMA 1100, languages, MET 1010, MUSC 1010, PHYS 1010 & 1040, PSY 1010, and SOC 1010. UBSCT reading scores do not qualify students for biology, economics, English, history, or math courses.

Accuplacer (CPT) Testing

Accuplacer (CPT) Testing is available at the SLCC Assessment Center (4600 So. Taylorsville Redwood Road), at the Jordan Campus (3491 W. Wights Fort Road), at the South City Campus (1575 S. State Street), or at participating high schools at certain times. A picture ID (school activity card or driver license) is required at the Assessment Center, and the student must be previously admitted to SLCC. The first test is included in the cost of college admission, but there is a $15 fee per sitting for retesting. The $15 sitting fee covers both math and English testing if completed at the same time.

Re-testing must occur at one of the SLCC Assessment Centers, not the high school. The math test may be re-taken once per semester for $15. Math scores may be used for placement for one year. English tests may be re-taken once per year for $15. English scores may be used for placement for two years.
