Substation Apprenticeship

The Substation Apprenticeship program is designed to provide related technical instruction for students currently employed as apprentice substation technicians in the electric power industry. A substation technician constructs, maintains, and repairs substation facilities and equipment used to deliver electric power to customers. The program covers topics related to construction, maintenance, and operation of substations including:
  • AC and DC electrical theory
  • Safety protocols required when working with electricity
  • Transformer theory and transformer connections
  • Ropes and rigging
  • Grounding
  • Switchgear and metering
  • Working on energized lines

Description

This course is for substation apprentices. Students will learn about basic electricity, electrical safety, tool use, Ohm's Law and series circuits. The course also covers parallel, combination and DC fundamentals.

Description

This course is for substation apprentices. Students will learn about reading electrical symbol diagrams; substations & switchyards; safety in transmission & distribution maintenance; trigonometry for AC electricity; induction & transformers; and T&D systems.

Description

This course is for substation apprentices. Students will learn about safety in substations & switchyards; electromagnetic induction; high voltage AC power; transformers; reading electrical system diagrams; and use of electrical test & line test equipment.

This course is for substation apprentices. Students will learn about distribution line safety; material handling bucket trucks; power transformer insulation resistor testing, turns ration testing, oil tests pressure relay testing and new inspection tests.

This course is for substation apprentices. Students will learn about safety in substations & switchyards; circuit breakers; contact resistance testing; circuit breaker inspections, time travel and analysis; hydraulic derricks; digging equipment; rigging.

Description

This course is for substation apprentices. Students will learn about bucket truck safety; capacitors & reactors; voltage regulators; relays 1 & 2; control equipment; high voltage terminations; and substation battery, chargers, replacement and testing.

Description This course is for substation apprentices. Students will learn about SF6 gas properties & handling; current transformer testing; vacuum bottle hi-pot testing; inferred conditioning monitoring; corona discharge testing; and multi-meter operation and use.

Description

This course is for substation apprentices. Students will learn about safety in transmission & distribution maintenance; use of electrical test equipment; distribution line safety; power transformer turns ratio testing and temperature indicating testing.

FAQs

Substation Apprenticeship classes start at the beginning of the SLCC Semester (Late August for Fall, second week of January for Spring). The classes are a blend of online learning and in-person labs. Labs are typically held on the Miller Campus in Sandy, UT. You will need to see your instructor or check online for actual lab dates/times

Substation apprentice students will be required to purchase the following texts
Delmar's Standard Textbook of Electricity (DSTE), 5th Edition which can be purchased here
Substation Operation and Maintenance wich can be purchased here.
Ugly's Electrical Reference can be purchased here.
APPA Safety Manual, 16th edition can be purchased here.

All classes are currently $782.00.

DROPS/WITHDRAWALS/REFUNDS/REGISTRATION POLICIES

If a student decides not to remain enrolled in a class, it is the student’s responsibility to contact the Program Coordinator to drop or withdraw from the class. Failure to officially drop classes not attended will result in failing grades and forfeiture of tuition due the College. Failure to officially drop may lead to enforcement of the college collection policy

Students are required to pay for all classes that they do not officially drop.

Full tuition will be refunded if student drops before the first day of class.

Tuition will not be refunded if student is a “no show” for entire class.

Last Date to Add Classes, Tuition Due Date will follow the Institutional Academic Calendar for the appropriate semester as Full Term 16-week schedule.

Registration Info

All apprentice courses at Salt Lake Community College are now open for registration.  Registration for the Fall 2017 semester is due by August 18th, classes start on August 23rd, and tuition is due no later than September 6th.

To register for classes, download and complete the appropriate registration form and submit your registration packet by:

You will need to know the course title, course ID, CRN, and semester, which can be found below.

The registration office will contact you when they receive your application to confirm your registration. Instructions to sign into the online classroom will be sent to you the week before classes begin and your instructor will contact you the first day of class.

Also, each student will be required to sign a “Student Financial Responsibility Agreement” immediately upon registration.  If you fail to do so prior to the first day of classes, you will be dropped.
