What does an Aircraft Dispatcher do? The Aircraft Dispatcher is a licensed airman certificated by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). A dispatcher performs the following duties:
Shares responsibility of flight safety with the captain.
Ensures commercial airlines follow regulations to expedite and ensure flight safety.
Analyzes and evaluates meteorological information to avoid potential hazards.
Computes the amount of fuel required for flights.
Prepares flight plans including maximum allowable takeoff and landing weights, weather reports, field conditions, NOTAMS, etc.
Prepares and signs the dispatch release authorizing flight departure.
Delays or cancels flights if unsafe conditions threaten the safety of aircraft or passengers.
Monitors weather conditions, aircraft position reports, and navigation charts during flights.
Updates pilot in command of significant changes to weather or flight plans and recommends flight plan alternates.
Originates and disseminates flight information to others.
What is an Aircraft Dispatcher's salary? The average entry level dispatcher's salary is from $26K to $30K. Graduates will find a good job market, but realistically should not expect to be hired off the street by major airlines; however a good basis for future employment with a major airline is a 5 year stint with one of the smaller carriers. Senior dispatchers with major airlines can earn from $100K to $150 K over time. These are seasoned individuals with 10-20 years of dispatch experience.
Is a certificate or degree available in this area of study? Yes, a certificate of achievement is awarded to students who successfully complete the program requirements with grades of 70% or better. These students are eligible to take the FAA administered examinations.
