Gertrude D. (Dy) Hayes Memorial Scholarship

The Gertrude D. (Dy) Hayes Memorial Scholarship was established in 2021 in memory of Gertrude D. (Dy) Hayes, who was an influential mentor of diagnostic radiology and an instructor ahead of her time in X-ray technology. The Gertrude D. (Dy) Hayes Memorial Scholarship is for students who are interested in pursuing an AAS degree in radiologic technology from Salt Lake Community College (SLCC).

Gertrude D. Hayes, lovingly called “Dy” by everyone who knew her, worked at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, as a diagnostic radiographer. X-rays were a true art form during this time and required the radiographer to have expertise in the layers of film, intensifying screens, film processing and proper techniques

Dy met the love of her life who also shared a love for diagnostic radiology, Ray Hardman, in the late 1980s. Dy and Ray were skilled artists in X-ray and exemplary teachers. When Dy first met Ray, she was a single mother working hard to support her son, Jacob. Working in the field of radiology back then was difficult and required a lot of planning, long hours, nights and weekends. Jacob often helped run films for his mother and learned the basics of producing X-rays through his mother’s tutelage.

In 1987, Dy became the clinical instructor at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center where she directly influenced the field and expertise of every student studying radiology. Dy was able to teach her craft to over 250 students in her career from varying walks of life, beliefs and cultures. She was able to guide students seamlessly to the right choices, procedures and protocols as well as provide just enough room to learn, grow and increase creativity.

Dy retired from the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in 2012 with 35 years of service to our nation’s veterans and SLCC students. Times have changed since Dy first started her career, but her spirit still lives on. To this day, many of the clinical instructors mentored by Dy have continued her teachings to the next generation of diagnostic radiology students.

Known for her sense of humor and environmentalism, Dy was also known for her patriotism by serving our nation’s veterans. She believed in hard work, standing up for what is right and loving those around her without judgment.
