| ASSESSMENT The following 5 Academic Student Learning Outcomes (ASLOs) are used to assess student progress within the various Salt Lake Community College environments:
1. Acquire substantive knowledge in the discipline of their choice sufficient for further study, and/or demonstrate competencies required by employers to be hired and succeed in the workplace.
2. Communicate effectively.
3. Develop quantitative literacies necessary for their chosen field of study.
4. Think critically.
5. Develop the knowledge and skills to be civically engaged, and/or work with others in a professional and constructive manner.
The outcomes for students in our ESL Program at the Skills Center are to improve their English language skills (in reading, writing, listening, and speaking), and to progress to their next level of study.
The assessment for improving language skills includes the following:
1. The CELSA (or CASAS) is given as a placement test and again at the end of each semester. Scores will be compared to determine increase in ability.
2. Students will successfully complete assignments and pass tests with a minimum of 80% mastery.
3. Computerized programs are available for individualized supplemental study. Eighty percent mastery is required to progress to the next assignment. Progress is recorded daily in the management system.
The assessment for progressing to the next level of study includes the following:
1. Students will pass to the next level within our ESL Program by scoring within the predetermined CELSA (or CASAS) score range.
2. The LOEP (Levels of English Proficiency test given at SLCC) is another assessment tool that determines students' abilities to study Level 4 College ESL or other non-ESL college credit classes at SLCC. Students passing this test complete our ESL Program at the Skills Center.
3. Other standardized tests (such as the ABLE, or TABE) may be used to determine students' completion of our ESL Program and their eligibility to pursue another level and area of study.
