ESL COURSES Level 1: Beginning SKILLS CENTER ESL COURSES KESL 0110 Beginning Grammar: General knowledge of the basic parts of speech and verb forms are introduced and practiced. Vocabulary development is included. KESL 0120 Beginning Reading/Writing/Communication Skills: General reading and writing skills are taught. Basic dictionary, punctuation and vocabulary building skills are included. Oral and written communication skills are practiced to increase the student's ability to perform essential tasks in the community. KESL 0450 Language Lab: SCIL Lab for individualized, computerized language development and/or communicative activities to develop conversational fluency. KESL 0210 Intermediate Grammar: Key structures and usages are introduced and practiced, including verb tenses, modal auxiliaries, nouns, adverbs, question words and formation, prepositions of time. KESL 0220 Intermediate Reading/Writing/Communication Skills: Intermediate reading and writing skills are taught, including vocabulary building, paragraph development, capitalization and punctuation, scanning, predicting, sequencing, main idea and detail, inference, and fact versus opinion. Oral and written communication skills are practiced to increase the student's ability to perform essential tasks in the community. KESL 0250 Intermediate Listening and Note-Taking Skills: The focus is on listening and speaking proficiency using pair and group work, including listening strategies, note-taking and organizational skills, vocabulary building and speaking in various contexts. KESL 0450 Language Lab: SCIL lab for individualized, computerized language development and/or communicative activities to develop conversational fluency. KESL 0310 Advanced Grammar: All verb forms and complex sentence structures may be taught to expand and integrate the student's understanding and working knowledge of English grammar, including all verb tenses, modal auxiliaries, passive voice, two-word verbs, time clauses and their adverbs, wishes and conditionals, gerunds, infinitives, prepositions, nouns, pronouns, and adjective clauses. KESL 0320 Advanced Reading/Writing/Communication Skills: The class includes vocabulary building, dictionary skills, summarizing, outlining, paragraph and essay development, interpreting charts and graphs, recognizing keys words of introduction and conclusion, inference, main idea and detail, fact versus opinion, social language, and cultural awareness. Class activities encourage cooperative learning and writing as a process. Oral and written communication skills are practiced to increase the student's ability to perform important responsibilities in the community. KESL 0350 Advanced Listening and Note-taking Skills: The student refines listening strategies, note-taking and organizational skills, academic vocabulary building, guessing meaning from context, recognizing discourse markers, reconstructing and summarizing main ideas, cooperative speaking activities, and test-taking skills. KESL 0450 Language Lab: SCIL lab for individualized, computerized language development and/or communicative activities to develop conversational fluency. Level 3(C): Advanced Pre-College KESL 0720 Reading/Writing: Advanced reading and vocabulary skills are practiced. Students are taught correct organizational styles for writing summaries of readings and college level essays. Grammar points particular to student needs are reviewed. KESL 0730 Listening and Speaking: Students are taught note-taking skills to prepare them for college level lectures. They are then tested on their comprehension of the lecture. Students also practice giving prepared speeches. KESL 0740 Computer Skills: Computer vocabulary is taught. Students learn and practice computer skills via Microsoft Word, e-mail, and the internet. KESL 0750 Pre-College Workshop: Student needs determine specific activities. Some areas of focus include pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary building, debate, American culture and government, student-selected readings and discussions. This hour may also be used for service learning projects as defined in the Listening and Speaking syllabus. DEVELOPMENTAL EDUCATION ESL COURSES ESL 1010 College Listening and Speaking: This course is designed to improve students' overall proficiency in the English language and the production and comprehension of English in the following college level skills and activities: listening to college lectures, taking notes on oral and written material, speaking and pronunciation, giving individual presentations, participating in classroom discussions. ESL 1020 College Reading and Writing: This course is designed to improve students' overall proficiency in English and to prepare them for college study through: reading and discussing college level texts, taking notes on oral and written material, learning vocabulary, preparing for writing assignments, writing and revising college essays. ESL 1030 ESL Conversation: This course is designed to provide students with intensive practice in conversing in the English language including the following activities: listening and analyzing taped conversations, engaging in guided conversations with the teacher and other students, participating in open classroom discussions, giving short presentations before the class, learning vocabulary for non-academic purposes, working to improve pronunciation. ESL 1040 ESL Grammar: This course is designed to provide students with instruction and practice in understanding and accurately using English grammar. Students will engage in the following activities: examine individual grammatical structures, complete textbook grammar exercises, identify grammatical structures in spoken and written English, edit the grammar of written texts, produce proper grammatical forms in oral and written exercises. ESL 1050 ESL Vocabulary: This course is designed to introduce students to a wider range of vocabulary in different contexts, including English for social, professional, and text-based purposes. Students will engage in the following activities: learn idiomatic expressions commonly used in conversations; examine technical, literary and professional terms through extensive readings; analyze word forms, roots, prefixes and suffixes in order to guess the meanings of new words. ESL 1060 ESL Pronunciation: This course is designed to provide students with instruction and intensive practice in comprehending and accurately producing English pronunciation. Students will engage in the following activities: analyze spoken English, paying close attention to the individual sounds, rhythms, stress and intonation; speak in groups and pairs; give short oral presentations. ESL 1080 Business English for ESL: This course introduces non-native speakers of English to the world of business and the English vocabulary and communication skills they will need to be successful in that world. Students will engage in the following activities: examine business practices and customs common to the U.S.; prepare a business plan; practice face-to-face, telephone and electronic conversations with "clients"; write business letters; prepare a resume; practice job interviews. |
