Explore Salt Lake City: Arts

BalletAn outdoor and sporting mecca, downtown Salt Lake City is also the place for culture. The city is home to a thriving downtown and rich cultural scene. The Utah Symphony, the Utah Opera, Ballet West, Repertory Dance Theatre all perform in downtown venues.

Other performing arts centers in downtown Salt Lake City are the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center, the Salt Lake Acting Company, the Repertory Dance Theatre, Broadway Across America, and the Gina Bachauer International Piano Festival. Numerous theaters, including SLCC’s The Grand Theatre are also located nearby.

Sundance isn’t the only (film) game in town. Utah also hosts the Slamdance Film and the LDS Film festivals. Both of these events are held during Sundance, and make Utah the center of the film work for two weeks. Other film festivals catering to niche audiences are held across the state. St. George hosts the Redrock Film Festival in January, the Bicknell International Film Festival in July and DocUtah in September; the Thunderbird Festival is held in Cedar City in April, the Foursite Film Festival takes place in Ogden in June.

For the past 35 years, each summer art-mad residents have been treated to the Utah Arts Festival. Featuring displays of the region’s best art and entertainment each year, the festival has become a four-day event with hundreds of visual and performing artists. More than 80,000 patrons flock to the festival each year.

Utah also offers many other art and cultural festivals that are too numerous to list. But no list would be near complete without the fabulous Greek Festival. Salt Lake City’s finale to summer during September’s first weekend, the Greek festival offers some of Utah’s best Greek food, dance and art.

The state also offers the Utah Shakespeare Festival—featuring a theater so authentic that the BBC used it to film part of its Shakespeare series—in Southern Utah, Utah Beer Festival, Oktoberfest, Japan Festival, Desert Rocks, Utah State Fair, and the Salt Lake City International Jazz Festival, among others.
