Introduction to Fashion
Prerequisite: None (2 Cr) A

An introduction to career opportunities available in the fashion industry, including an analysis of employer expectations and specialization areas such as buying and designing, fashion coordinating, and textile technology.

FASH 1100
Methods of Pattern Design
Prerequisite:  None (3 Cr) F
Half and full-scale standard patterns will be used to teach basic pattern making skills using such methods as flat pattern, slash and spread, pivoting, draping, and copying with emphasis on learning to "fit properly." Students will make a final project of their own design. Basic sewing skills skills recommended.

Your Personal Pattern I
Prerequisites: FASH 1100 (2 Cr) F, Sp
Provides a special technique of pattern making by implementing a few specific measurements.

FASH 1210
Fashion Illustration/Design I
Prerequisite: None (2 Cr) A

Teaches students to draw articles of clothing in correct proportion using a guide figure.  Students will learn to illustrate textures and the use of color to graphically illustrate individual designs.

FASH 1220
Fashion Illustration/Design II
Prerequisite: FASH 1210 (2 Cr) F, Sp

Students will develop their own style of illustrations, and broaden their knowledge of professional designers and illustrators, and experience public exposure by exhibiting their designs in a showcase or a gallery.

Visual Merchandising
Prerequisite: None (2 Cr) Sp

An introduction to the principles and elements of design as it relates to merchant displays.  Students will create displays emphasizing line, balance, color and harmony. Each student will design and implement his/her design in an area retail store.

History of Fashion
Prerequisite: None (2 Cr) F

This class reviews the history of fashion fads and trends through the use of prints and slides.  Contemporary fashion and how design is influenced by historical costumes will be reviewed and applied to in-class projects.

Art of Corset Making
Lab Fee: $19

FASH 1500
Beginning Sewing
Prerequisite: None (2 Cr) F, Sp

This course is designed to teach basic sewing skills.  Students will also operate and work with sewing machines, as well as other dewing equipment. Students who already have this knowledge may test out of this class with the instructor's approval.

Intermediate Sewing
Prerequisite: FASH 1500 (3 Cr) F, Sp

An intermediate level sewing class, teaching students necessary skills for specific construction techniques, utilizing a notebook format.

Advanced Sewing
Prerequisite: FASH 1500, 1505 (3 Cr) Sp

This course is designed to teach independent sewing skills and advanced clothing construction.

Vocational Alterations & Costuming
Prerequisite: Instructor's Approval and basic knowledge of sewing (2 Cr) F

This course teaches the techniques of perfecting the fit of ready-made garments, which will prepare students for employment in stores, dry cleaners and costume shops.

Advanced Alteration & Fit
Prerequisite: FASH 1550  (2 Cr) Sp
Lab Fee: $19

This course will teach more of the techniques of perfecting the fit of ready-made garments. Tailoring and other techniques, such as costuming, will be introduced.  Students will need to provide articles of clothing on which to work.

Knitwear Design
Lab Fee: $19

FASH 1600
Serger Class
Prerequisites: FASH 1500 (2 Cr) F

Covers the mechanics of the serger, making decorative stitches, and working with Lycra. The student will complete several projects such as a serger bag, T-shirt, and pants.

The internship program connects students who have completed a large portion of the curriculum with businesses in their field of interest.  This valuable work experience teaches the student to apply the knowledge they have gained in school to 'real life' situations.

Fashion Show Production
Prerequisite: None (4 Cr) Sp

Students will examine all aspects, from marketing to presentation, involved in producing a fashion show.  This study will culminate with the production of the annual Spring Fashion Show produced by the students.

Special Projects/Corset Making
Prerequisite: Instructor's Approval, FASH 1505 (2 Cr) F
Learn the rare and fine art of Corset making. This class explores the different facets of making a corset such as spiral boning, boning placement, coutil underlining, grommets, tipped lacings, bias binding techniques, bias making tools and couture style hand finishing techniques.

Internship for Fashion
Prerequisite: FASH 1505, 1100 (3 Cr) A
Provides students the opportunity to work in the fashion industry as patternmaker, designer, or fashion merchandiser.

FASH 2010
Textiles
Prerequisite: None (2 Cr) F

This course covers the process of textile construction and follows the production of the clothing article. Students will analyze various fibers and examine fiber strength, durability and resiliency.

Advanced Meth./Pattern Design Fit
Prerequisites: FASH 1100 (3 Cr) F, Sp

A continuation of FASH 1100. Students will draft their own basic pattern set and use this set as the basis for actual product construction.

Psychology of Clothing
Prerequisite: None (2 Cr) Sp

This course reviews the social, psychological and economic aspects of fashion from an historical perspective. Students also examine styles and approaches to fashion in various contemporary cultures.

Fashion Buying and Management
Prerequisite: None (2 Cr) F

This course explores all aspects of buying and management as they relate to the fashion industry.  The class focus includes pricing, planning, assortment, customer service, selling skills and inventory issues.

Fashion Forecasting
Prerequisite: None (2 Cr) Sp

Students will gain an understanding of the theories of fashion change and examine forecasting practices throughout the textile and apparel industry, learning how to observe, evaluate forecasting practices and incorporate them into one's own forecasting activities.

Advanced Design
Prerequisites: FASH 1100, 1210, 1500, 1505, 2010
Concurrent with FASH 2100, 1501, (3 Cr) Sp

Students will explore past and present fashion designs and designers, review art and design principles, study fashion markets and use this information to design and produce an original fashion collection. The student will have the opportunity to enter the finished collection in the Fashion Institute Spring Fashion Show.

Portfolio & Presentation
Prerequisite: Approval (2 Cr) Sp

this course is designed to help students gather a collection of their best work from the Fashion Institute courses in order to present a professional portfolio to a prospective employer.

FASH 2500
Fashion Entrepreneurship
Prerequisite: FASH 1100, 1210, 1505, 2010, 2400, 2240
Concurrent with: FASH 2100, 2450 (3 Cr) F, Sp
This course is a look at the fashion entrepreneurial opportunities available in the apparel industry.  Goal setting, record keeping, business promotion, and the pros and cons of self-employment are discussed.  Individual business plans are created.  Students contemplating a small business will benefit from this course.
