Many courses have prerequisites that can be met by completing the placement process. Students can fulfill these prerequisites by going through the placement process or by providing ACT or SAT scores to the college. Additionally, previous college credit may fulfill some prerequisites. For more information on course prerequisites please refer to the course descriptions found in the General Catalog.

No, but we recommend you go through the placement process, or submit your ACT or SAT scores, or previous college level English and Math credit, before attending an Orientation program. This will ensure you can register for classes during orientation

If you believe you meet the requirements to be classified as a resident, you may appeal nonresident status by filling out an Application for Residency Classification.

If you are a first-time, first-year student, former concurrent or early enrollment student, you are required to attend an orientation. If you are a returning or transfer student, you will be given an earlier registration date if you complete orientation.

Students enrolling in the School of Applied Technology must complete the SAT orientation. To sign up speak with SAT Enrollments Services (801-957-3354) or an SAT advisor (801-957-3778) or visit the SATTS site for more information.

International students (those who have F-1 visas) must complete International Student Orientation.

We have two types of orientation and you can choose the type that fits your needs best.

  • In-person – This is a two-hour session offered mornings, afternoons, and evenings throughout the year and are held at either the Taylorsville, South City, Jordan, Miller, or West Valley campuses. New students who attend an In-person session will get focused attention and feel more prepared to start at Salt Lake Community College.
  • Online – Ideally, we'd like to see you on campus for orientation, but we realize that isn't an option for everyone. Our online orientation is good for students unable to attend an in-person, campus-based orientation or for transfer students who are already familiar with college expectations and procedures. Please be aware that a follow-up advising session is highly recommended.

If you completed the online orientation, your course registration hold will be released within 24 hours. If you completed an in-person session, we will release your hold after you finish the orientation program.

Yes, we offer orientation sessions at Taylorsville Redwood, South City, Jordan, and Miller Campuses. You may attend orientation at any campus even if you intend to take classes at another campus.

Visit our office and we can help you figure out your next steps. You can also view holds on MySLCC.
