  • Radiological Technology
  • Respiratory Therapy
  • Surgical Technology

Create an Evolve/Elsevier account

You will be taking the HESI online at the Health Science Assessment Center. Before you arrive to take the HESI, you must create an Evolve/Elsevier account. If you already have an account with Evolve/Elsevier, do not create a new account but make sure you know your username and password. If you have not previously created an account, go here and click Login. A login box will appear with a link that says Create Account. Note that the Evolve/Elsevier account is different from your MySLCC account and the Health Science Pre-Admission test scheduler for which you may already have accounts. Also check any confirmation emails you receive from Evolve/Elsevier, as they may change the username or password you initially submit.

Required Exam Modules

There are eleven standard modules to the HESI. SLCC Health Science programs do not require candidates to complete the Chemistry or Physics modules. Other programs do not require all of the six basic modules listed below. Check with your program advisor for the current list of HESI required modules. Most Health Science programs require these modules:

  • Reading Comprehension
  • Vocabulary and General Knowledge
  • Grammar
  • Math
  • Biology
  • Anatomy and Physiology

Dental Hygiene and Respiratory Therapy also require the Critical Thinking Module.

Respiratory Therapy does not require the Biology or Anatomy and Physiology modules.

There are additional sections that help identify your personality and learning style, but you will not be scored in these sections, nor will your answers affect your admission status.

The exam is not timed and includes a total of 275 questions.

Retake the HESI

Most programs allow students to retake the HESI once to improve their exam scores. Some programs allow more than one retake in a two-year period. Check with your Academic Advisor to find out what your program allows. There is a mandatory two-week waiting period before another attempt is allowed, in order to give students time to study and review the modules being retaken. If you retake the exam, your admission score will reflect the highest score achieved on each module.

Whether you choose to retake the entire test or only some of the modules, you must pay the entire full cost of the test again.

To retake the exam, login to the Test Scheduler. After you login, you will see your test history. Select a test from the top part of that page and pay the testing fee.
