When should I see a Health Care Provider (HCP)?

When you are sick

Most people associate health care with illness, but should you come in when you have a cold? A cough? A headache? Knowing when you are sick enough to see a HCP can be confusing. After all, few people want to spend the time and money on an unnecessary appointment. It is important to remember that having any symptom of illness that is chronic (happens frequently) or is severe enough to be debilitating (weakening to the point of immobility) means you should see a health care provider as soon as possible. Some minor symptoms may simply run their course and can be treated at home with such old-fashioned remedies as sleep, soup and sympathy. However, there are some guidelines to follow. You should see a HCP if you experience any of the following:

  • fever of over 102 degrees or lasting more than 1 week
  • congestion, sore-throat, or cough lasting more than 1 week or chronic in nature
  • joint or muscle aches not from activity, accompanied by discoloration or heat, or chronic in nature
  • nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea that lasts more than 2 days, causes severe dehydration, may be associated with possible pregnancy, or is chronic in nature, or if blood is present in either vomit or stool
  • earache or ear pressure that lasts more than a week
  • headache that is accompanied by visual impairment (aura), severe light sensitivity, severe neck pain or rigidity, or that is chronic in nature.

Remember that these are only guidelines and that taking a better safe than sorry approach to your health is advisable.

When you are well

One of the best ways to keep from getting sick is good preventative care. Regardless of you age or perceived health you should have an annual well-visit. An annual well-visit can catch potential threats to your health and also give you piece of mind. This is also a great opportunity to ask your HCP questions you may have about your health. You may want to write some questions down to take to your appointment. For women over 18 an annual exam should include a breast exam and pap smear, for men a breast and testicular exam

In an on-campus emergency

The Health and Wellness Student Clinic is prepared to handle minor cuts, burns, bumps and sprains. If you have a minor accident on-campus the Medical Clinic is probably your quickest and least expensive option.
