Some Suggestions for Reading a Math Text

  • Sometimes it is necessary to spend more time reading than working homework.

  • Read the sections before each class meeting when new material is introduced. Those sections should definitely be read before attempting homework problems.

  • It may be necessary to read each section several times.  Each time you read the section, you are closer to understanding the material.  The homework will be much easier for you if you have spent the necessary time reading.

  • Be sure you understand the keywords. If you are unsure on some of the terminology, use the index to find where a term is defined or be sure to ask your instructor. Sometimes it is helpful to keep a journal of definitions, theorems, and concepts.

  • You learn mathematics by doing, so if the book asks you to check something, take the time to verify the calculations.
