Stories from our students
Students from Coloring Outside the Lines tell us about their experiences here at Salt Lake Community College.
Tevita Heimuli aka Leka
Major: Social Work / Performing Arts
COL has helped me embrace my sexuality and has made me feel comfortable in my skin. I feel more empowered and more confident in myself and being gay. "Different shouldn't be shunned, it should be celebrated."
Major: Small Business Ownership
Coloring Outside the Lines has helped me build my confidence. Especially when I had cancer, they were there to keep my mind busy. I have also made some great friends through this club. I have had some great inspiring talks with Jonathon Wilson.
Iran is my home where I couldn't be who I am and was never open about my sexuality. How I was treated put me in a place where I could not be proud of who I am. Moving to America didn't change much, until now. I attended SLCC and joined C.O.L. This club has helped me to understand that it's not hard to be open about who you are. They helped me believe in myself and treat me like family. I am proud to be part of C.O.L.
Major: Biology or Music
I am 19 and I am a student here at SLCC. I would love to work in a zoo, helping and taking care of animals. I would also love to be part of a professional orchestra and play the violin. C.O.L. has helped me to meet new people and has given me a better understanding of the LGBTQ community. I have branched out of my comfort zone and joined many different clubs. C.O.L. helps me to know of upcoming events, that I can volunteer for. C.O.L. has many different kinds of people whom I can identify with and have given me aspirations to involve myself in activities that will shape my future.
C.O.L. provides a chance to meet a group of diverse people fighting for gender and sexual equality. C.O.L. is always working to help member and the community-at-large.
