What is Non-Destructive testing at SLCC?
The nondestructive testing program offers students the opportunity for a career in a progressive new field with many diverse job opportunities and excellent entry-level salaries.

Nondestuctive testing involves the examination of an object in any manner that will not impair its future usefulness. The six major NDT methods, radiography, eddy current, magnetic particle, liquid penetrant, visual and ultrasonics are used in a variety of industries including aerospace, petro-chemical, automotove, metals, non-metals, nuclear, marine, electronics, construction, aircraft, materials joining, utilities and many others. Students learn to perform the basic testing techniques on both metals and non-metals such as synthetics and composites, as well as how to evaluate results and write final reports.

Any course offered in this program can be taken as part of the vocational/technical electives for an associate of science degree in general studies.

What are the facilities like?
The main facility is located at SLCC's Meadowbrook Campus located at 3900 South and 250 West in Salt Lake City.

Radiography Lab

Magnetic Particle Testing Lab

Eddy Current and Ultrasonic Testing Lab

Liquid Penetrant Lab

Classes are also taught at the Aviation Maintenance Facility located at SLCC’s Airport Campus. Classes are taught in the classroom and students are taught the use and operation of equipment at the Meadowbrook Campus. Some Advanced NDT classes are taught at the Aviation Maintenance Department located in the hanger.

Where will I be able to work upon graduation?
Currently the job market for NDT technicians is excellent. Employment can be obtained in a variety of industries. Because each testing method is unique, a technician can specialize in a specific method or work using all testing methods.

Jobs are available both in-state and out-of-state. Technicians can work part time or full time depending on the type of work available.

When you graduate you have met the requirements of a Level II technician. You will need to obtain on-the-job work experience in order to fulfill the hours required to become certified in each NDT method. These hours will vary depending on the method.

Level I - $12 to $15 per hour

Level II - $15 to $25 per hour

Level III - $20 to $75 per hour

Many Level IIIs work in research & development, as supervisors or develop and write procedures.
