Assessment Center Hours at all locations:
Placement TestingThe CPT is given at the SLCC Assessment Center on a weekday basis and can be taken anytime after applying for admission. No appointment is necessary. The CPT is an untimed test; a student can take as long as needed to complete it, although they will be stopped at our posted closing time. They can then return on another day. A photo ID is required. There is no passing or failing grade on the CPT; test results are used only for class placement for English and Math. Retests for English are limited to 1 per year. Math may be retested twice per semester. A fee is charged for retests. For class placement, the Math department requires test scores that are not more than one year old and the English department requires scores that are not more than two years old. Students who have already taken the ACT test may bring their scores to Enrollment Services and those scores may be used for placement under the same restrictions as the CPT. The placement testing requirement may also be waived with certain transfer credits. After previous college transcripts have been received and evaluated by Enrollment Services, notification will be sent by mail if all or part of the testing requirement can be waived. CLEP ExaminationsCLEP is a national program of examination to evaluate and confirm the academic achievement of individuals who have reached a college level of education through either traditional or non-traditional means of study. SLCC awards credit only for the following general CLEP exams: English Composition w/essay, Natural Sciences, Humanities, and Social Science and History. SLCC accepts the CLEP foreign language exam in Spanish, German and French. However, if a student is planning to transfer to either the University of Utah or BYU, they should contact those schools about language testing. Neither of those schools will accept CLEP foreign language credit. The CLEP test is given by appointment and a fee is charged. For further information, or to set an appointment, call (801) 957-4426. Challenge TestingStudents who feel that their experience or previous knowledge enables them to demonstrate mastery of a particular subject area may take a challenge examination for the class. Challenge examinations are not available in all classes. Students should not register for or be enrolled in the class they plan to challenge. If the student has ever been enrolled in the class, they are not eligible to challenge it. This includes classes that have been failed or audited. A fee is charged for a challenge test. Contact the Assessment Center at (801) 957-4269 for further information. Students should be aware that some colleges and universities may not accept transfer credit that has been earned by examination. GED TestingThe GED test is available for students who did not complete high school. Successful completion of the test may also be applied toward a regular adult education diploma. Students must be at least 17 in order to test. If students are 17 or 18 AND their high school class has NOT graduated, students will need a letter of permission from their parents AND a letter from their school district stating they have been officially withdrawn from high school. All students must have picture ID. This must be a government issued form of ID, i.e., a passport, state driver’s license or state ID card. A fee is charged. For more information, see GED testing site or call (801)957-4426. |
