PREREQUISITES
MATH

A good math background (MATH 0950, MATH 0920 or CPT score placing student into MATH 0990 or higher) is necessary to begin this program due to course content and accelerated pace. The math class must have been completed within two years of applying to the program and must have a C grade or higher. The CPT test score must be within one year of applying to the program.

TYPING
A current typing test is required with a net speed of 30 words per minute.

GRADE REQUIREMENT
A student must maintain a C grade or higher in every class to qualify for the certificate.

PHAR 1010
Introduction to Pharmacy Practice; 2 CR; F, SP;
Prerequisites: MATH 920 or 950 or CPT score placing student into Math 990 or above
This course analyzes the fundamentals of pharmacies and health care institutions in the US today. Pharmaceutical and medical terms, career opportunities, safety considerations, dosage forms and quality control are explored. Federal and state pharmacy laws and regulations are reviewed.

PHAR 1020
Introduction to Pharmacology I; 2 CR; F, SP
Prerequisites: MATH 920 or 950 or CPT score placing student into Math 990 or above
This course discusses the nature of drugs, drug absorption and patient variables that affect drug therapy. Drug classification and nomenclature are also discussed.

PHAR 1030
Compounding/Sterile Products; 2 CR; SP, SU
Prerequisites: PHAR 1010, 1020, 1040

This course reviews packaging, preservation and storage of compounded drugs.  Coated tablets, solutions and suspensions are examined. Sterile procedures with vials and IV bottles and bags are explained

PHAR 1040
Calculations & Law; 2 CR; F, SP
Prerequisites: MATH 920 or 950 or CPT score placing student into Math 990 or above
This course covers Pharmacy State and Federal regulatory agencies and accountability for the technicians. There will be a strong emphasis on pharmacy math, dosage calculations and conversions.

PHAR 1050
Pharmacy Computers; 2 CR; F, SP
Prerequisites: PHAR 1010, typing test 30 WPM; MA 1100

This course stresses practical applications of the concepts learned in PHAR 1010. Hands-on experience with a computerized system for dispensing prescriptions and preparing third party pay documents.

PHAR 1060
Pharmacology II; 2 CR; SP, SU
Prerequisites: PHAR 1020

This course is a continuation of PHAR 1020 with evaluation of further drug classifications and therapeutic use of those drugs.

PHAR 1065
Pharmacology III/ Over the Counter Drugs; 2 CR; SP, SU
Prerequisites: PHAR 1020, concurrent with PHAR 1060

This course discuss over-the-counter medications/products with emphasis on knowledge required for making appropriate recommendations for selection and use of these products by consumers.

PHAR 1070
Fieldwork Preparation; 4 CR; SU, F
Prerequisites: All PHAR classes and MA 110

This course analyzes distribution procedures to patients in the hospital and patient medication profiles. The course reviews community pharmacies and specific technician duties.  Included in this class are practical on-site experiences in both hospital and community settings.

MA 1100
Medical Terminology; 2CR; A
Prerequisites: None

This course uses videos, supplemented lecture and covers over 350 medical word roots, suffices, prefixes.  Emphasis placed on pronunciation, spelling, proper usage of medical terminology. Medical abbreviations are also introduced.
