Emergency Preparedness
Emergency Preparedness is one of the modules of SLCC Required Training offered on a continuing basis through the Staff Development Office. Required Training is training that all employees must complete upon hire and again every three years.
The training provides specific instructions on what employees should do in the event of a variety of emergencies, such as:
AnthraxBomb Threat
Building Evacuation
Chemical Spill
Earthquake
Elevator Failure
Emergency Telephones
Fire
Flood
Medical Emergency
Power Failure
Snow Storm or Other Severe Storm
Workplace Violence

Building Marshal Program
The Salt Lake Community College Building Marshal Program is used to train selected College personnel for emergency operations in each building. This program is critical to overall achievement of emergency preparedness.
Each building has at least one building marshal with one or more designated alternates. One trained building marshal will be in each building during all regular hours of occupancy, if possible. Larger buildings may have multiple building marshals that coordinate their activities. Each of these building marshals has a team of 2-10 members who have completed Campus Emergency Response training and who have been assigned specific tasks and have been given supplies to carry out their tasks. Each building marshal has a larger cache of supplies to carry out emergency operations and to resupply their team members. Each campus has a cache of emergency equipment and supplies to aid in the emergency management effort.
CERT Training
SLCC offers Community Emergency Response Training (CERT) training bi-annually. The training is composed of the FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) curriculum, including:
- Disaster Preparedness
- Disaster Fire Suppression
- Disaster Medical Operation
- Light Search and Rescue
- Disaster Psychology
- Team Organization
- Terrorism and CERT
Once individuals are trained, they become part of the CERT team for the building they work in. Then, in the event of a disaster, they are activated to work with their team under the direction of the building marshal and SLCC Emergency Operations. Some building marshals hold periodic, short meetings for their teams; others do not. About once a year, we ask CERT team members to participate in a training meeting or drill. We also encourage additional training such as CPR and first aid.
