What is SkillsUSA?
SkillsUSA is a national student organization serving students enrolled in career and technical education training programs at our nation’s public high schools and colleges 

What states participate in SkillsUSA?
SkillsUSA has approximately 15,000 school chapters in 54 state and territorial associations,

How has Utah done in the competitions in the past?
Over the past 30 years, Utah students have won more medals at the National SkillsUSA Championships than any other state in the nation.

How does SkillsUSA benefit me?
SkillsUSA benefits students by:

  • Teaching teamwork and leadership
  • Reinforcing employability skills
  • Offering a national contest program
  • Providing ways to serve the local community
  • Offering $1 million in scholarships annually
  • Helping students meet potential employers

Are there dues associated with SkillsUSA?
Yes, $8 for State (deadline Feb. 15, 2013) and $14 for national (March 1, 2013 deadline).

Where will the state competition be held this year?
At Salt Lake Community College, March 28th and 29th, 2013.

Do I have to plan to compete to belong to the local chapter?
Absolutely not!  The SkillsUSA competition is just a part of the program.  Personal and professional development is a huge part of why the program exists.

Where are the nationals held?
Kansas City, Mo, June 24-28. More than 15,000 people are expect to participate in the week long event. More http://www.skillsusa.org/events/nlsc13.shtml

Can I compete in the nationals, if I am not a member of SkillsUSA?
No, you will not be allowed to compete.

I understand that a service project is required this year and must be documented, what are other chapters doing? http://www.skillsusa.org/events/service2.shtml

What if I graduated from the Community College in November and the competitions aren’t until March?
If you were a student in the current academic year, you are eligible to compete.

Is there a limit to the number of times I can compete?
Yes, Post Secondary students can compete at the state level 2 times.High school students can compete twice in High School and twice in college.

What is the SkillsUSA national conference pin and T-shirt design competition?
This is sponsored by Lowes and open to all dues-paying student members with various awards (www.skillsusa.org/compete/pindesign.shtml )

How many people does it take to setup a chapter?
One student + One advisor = One Chapter

What is the resume requirement?
All students must create a resume on-line.  This resume will be a part of every score card.  Printing of resumes is discouraged for security reasons.

I understand that this is a Leadership Contest requirement?
Yes, each chapter is required to have one of their members compete in at least one category.  Job Interview Skills is an example of one contest.  The State website has other categories of competitions in this category.

What contests can I compete in?

What is the Knowledge Test?
This is a test used for tie-breakers.  The questions cover questions about the SkillsUSA theme, colors, emblem, etc.
