Staff Photographer (The Globe)
The Globe is currently hiring multiple staff photographers to start during the Spring 2018 semester. Broaden your artistic talents and enter the world of photojournalism!
About The Globe
As the student newspaper of Salt Lake Community College, The Globe serves as a stepping stone for SLCC students looking to enter the workforce as journalists, photographers or editors. Every edition is created, written and published by students.
The Globe is printed once weekly in tabloid format and published online at www.globeslcc.com.
Responsibilities
- Take visually interesting, high-resolution photographs for The Globe
- Gather important details for each photo (who, what, when, where, why) and ensure accuracy of information
- Apply appropriate edits to photos (color correction, cropping, etc.) when necessary
- Upload photos and related information to online newsroom
- Complete photo assignments, including photo essays, as requested by editorial staff
- Attend and participate in weekly staff meetings
- Share and discuss your work or other Globe stories on social media
- Maintain a positive, professional working relationship with Globe staff and advisors
Requirements
- Have a basic understanding of newspaper operations
- Show the ability to produce print-quality photography
- Follow the newsroom workflow to meet all deadlines
- Enroll in or complete ART 1320 or equivalent photography courses
- Have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better
Bonus Skills/Qualities
- A desire to learn and excel in photojournalism
- Able to handle multiple assignments efficiently
- Able to produce high-quality work on a tight deadline
- Able to work well in a team environment
- Strong communication skills
- Active on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and other social media sites
- Proficient in photo editing software
- A basic understanding of digital asset management
Hours & Pay, etc.
A Staff Photographer is a part-time contract position; pay is dependent on amount of publishable photo assignments delivered. Staff Photographers must complete 24 publishable photo assignments (photo essays count as 2 photo assignments) per semester to receive full stipend. All Globe staff members must keep a work log and turn it in to SMC Program Manager each semester in order to verify pay.
