Staff Writer (The Globe)
The Globe is currently hiring multiple staff writers to start during the Spring 2017 semester. Build your reporting skills and tell the stories that happen on campus!
About The Globe
As the student newspaper of Salt Lake Community College, The Globe serves as a stepping stone for SLCC students looking to enter the workforce as journalists, photographers or editors. Every edition is created, written and published by students.
The Globe is printed once weekly in tabloid format and published online at www.globeslcc.com.
Responsibilities
- Write original articles in news style and ensure all information is accurate
- Accept story assignments as requested by editorial staff
- Attend and participate in weekly staff meetings
- Work with photographers or videographers as needed to get media for a story
- Share or post your work or other Globe stories on social media
- Maintain a positive, professional working relationship with Globe staff and advisors
Requirements
- Be familiar with journalistic writing
- Have a basic understanding of newspaper operations
- Follow the newsroom workflow to meet all deadlines
- Enroll in or complete COMM 1610, COMM 1130 or equivalent journalism courses
- Have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better
Bonus Skills/Qualities
- Knowledge of Associated Press (AP) style
- Experience in newspaper operations
- Strong interviewing skills
- Able to handle multiple assignments efficiently
- Able to produce high-quality work on a tight deadline
- Able to work well in a team environment
- Active on Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites
- Know how to use Microsoft Word and Word Online
Hours & Pay, etc.
A Staff Writer is a part-time contract position; pay is dependent on amount of publishable articles delivered. Staff Writers must complete 24 publishable articles per semester to receive full stipend. All Globe staff members must keep a work log and turn it in to SMC Program Manager each semester in order to verify pay.
