Live online tutoring
New:
Watch our new online video orientation for Live Online Tutoring (15MB Quicktime movie).
Live online tutoring for Fall Semester 2009 Begins on Tuesday, September 8, 2009.
The Student Writing Center offers live online tutoring via SLCC's Wimba system. Tutoring is conducted through an audio/video interface. You will meet with your writing advisor at a specific time to discuss your work. All students using this system will need talk with their writing advisor through the Wimba system's voice interface through your computer or through a toll-free phone number found in the system. Video is not necessary, although it is desirable to make the most of the experience.
In order to use this service it is best to arrange an appointment with your Writing Advisor in advance. To make an appointment, please email the writing advisor at the email address next to their name. Please put "ONLINE TUTORING REQUEST" in your subject line to ensure that the tutor will know the email is for an online appointment.
Note: Writing Advisors are not available outside their scheduled tutoring times.

2) Go to
http://slcclive.wimba.com3) Click on "Participant Login"
4) Enter your first and last name in the "Name" field and click on enter
5) If this is your first time using Wimba you will be required to run the setup wizard in order to access the system. Click on the "Run Wizard" button and follow the directions. (Note: a common problem is the anti-popup feature of web browsers. You will need to allow your browser to accept pop ups from the web site)
6) After completing the wizard (if necessary) and clicking on "Launch" you should see the Wimba interface with a list of rooms.
7) Find the "Student Writing Center" and click on the link
8) After a few moments, you should hear and audible tone indicating that your system is up and ready to go
9) To talk with the tutor either click on the "Talk" button with your mouse, or hold down the "Ctrl" key
10) If you prefer to talk on the phone, click on the phone icon above the status/chat window towards the bottom of the screen. This will give you a number to call and a special PIN to access the room
11) Your Writing Advisor will inform you on the best method to share you writing with her or him. This may involve email, or using a submission form. We strive to make the exchange easiest for you and the Writing Advisor.
If you have any difficulties logging in, send an email to your writing advisor explaining the problem.ive
