CIVICALLY-ENGAGED SCHOLARS
Requirements: Academic Service-Learning Track

Civically Engaged Scholars in this track must complete the following:

Civic Engagement Foundation Course (HUMA 1900)
This one-credit foundation course provides a general introduction to the concept of civic engagement. Students should take the course during their first year in the program.

Service-Learning Coursework
Scholars complete six credits of service-learning coursework. Students can choose from any designated service-learning class. (For a complete listing, click here.)

Co-Curricular Service
Students complete 150 service hours at a non-profit, government agency, or school. Hours spent in service-learning classes do not count toward the co-curricular service total.

Capstone Project
This is the final project for Civically-Engaged Scholars. It must meet a demonstrated community need, be approved by a capstone committee, and be sustainable.

3.0 GPA
Students must have at least a 3.0 GPA to graduate in the program.

Meetings with Program Advisor
Students must schedule an appointment with the program advisor at least once during each semester they are enrolled in the program. The advisor will monitor the progress of the student and make sure that all reflection assignments to date have been turned in.

IMPORTANT:  If students don’t have contact with the advisor or turn in any reflection forms during the semester, they will be placed on probation with the program. If there is no contact for two semesters, they will be dropped from the program.

Reflection Assignments
Critical reflection is an integral part of the Civically-Engaged Scholar program. Participants complete reflections after completing service-learning classes, co-curricular service, and workshops. The students will keep one copy to include in their final portfolios and give another copy to the program advisor each semester.

Final Portfolio
During their last semester in the program, students turn in their final portfolio. This is a compilation of their experience in the program demonstrating not only that they have completed the requirements but also what they have learned.
