Salt Lake Community College provides quality higher education and lifelong learning to people of diverse cultures, abilities, and ages. As Utah’s only comprehensive community college, we serve the needs of community and government agencies, business, industry, and other employers. Community engagement is woven into the cultural fabric of our institution through our mission statement, strategic plan, and college-wide student learning outcomes.

The Thayne Center for Service & Learning, established in 1994, is celebrating 20 years of connecting Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) with our greater community through civic learning and democratic engagement. This Student Services department serves as the primary access point for students, faculty, and nonprofit partners who want to serve and learn in our community. The Thayne Center is recognized nationally as a leader in the field of service-learning. Since 2003 we’ve been awarded three national and five state grants in recognition and support of our work. The American Association of Community Colleges named the Thayne Center as a lead mentor in two national service-learning initiatives (2006-2009 and 2009-2012). The Community College National Center for Community Engagement (CCNCCE) honored the Thayne Center with the CCNCCE Service-Learning Collaboration Award for Work with Universities (2008). In 2013 the League for Innovation in the Community College honored the Thayne Center's Nonprofit Volunteer Management Training Series with a national Innovation of the Year Award, a recognition also bestowed internally by the SLCC Center for Innovation. In 2013 we were selected to participate in NASPA's Lead Initiative for Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement. We have been named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor roll every year since its inception in 2006.

The Thayne Center manages five student leadership programs, including federal community work-study and Alternative Breaks. We model our co-curricula on the fundamentals of service-learning pedagogy and social change theory. In 2012-2013 alone we engaged 5,764 student volunteers in 104,194 hours of service to the community, an economic value of $2,306,855. We coordinate SLCC’s community partner outreach program, designed to work directly with nonprofits in the Salt Lake valley. In addition to providing volunteers, we coordinate an award-winning professional development training series, and facilitate campus resources to increase our partner’s capacity to meet community needs. The Thayne Center also manages SLCC’s academic service-learning program, including faculty professional development and pedagogical course design. In 2012-2013, our 250 designated service-learning courses enrolled 5,570 students who contributed 73,468 hours of service to the community. Nearly 33% of SLCC students (per FTE) were enrolled and engaged in a service-learning course.
