If I have previous college credit, do I need to take the Accuplacer exam?
You will not need the Accuplacer for math placement if you have completed a math course within the past year at another institution with a “C” grade or higher, or you have already fulfilled your math requirement for your degree. If you have completed the equivalent of ENGL 1010 with a grade of “C” or higher, you will also be exempt from taking the reading portion of the Accuplacer for placement into English classes.
If I am not planning to earn any kind of degree, diploma or certificate at SLCC, should I still request a transfer evaluation?
No. Credit is only transferred if it can be applied to specific graduation requirements. However, if you plan to take any courses for which Math or English, or Biology classes are prerequisites, you will need an evaluation to see whether or not you have met the prerequisites.
What if I want to use a course I took at another institution as a prerequisite?
All students who have completed prerequisites at another institution will be required to submit an official copy of their transcript(s) to SLCC. Students will need to complete the REQUEST FOR EVALUATION FORM to designate which class(es) need to be evaluated for prerequisites. Prerequisites must be part of a student’s academic history for registration. Please plan ahead to ensure your prerequisite has been evaluated and posted prior to semester registration dates.
If I did poorly at my previous college, how will that affect my GPA?
This will not affect your GPA because we do not include your grades from other colleges in your SLCC GPA. We only transfer in courses and credit hours as long as classes were college level and met the minimum grade requirement.
How and when will I be notified when my credit is accepted?
Transfer credit evaluations are completed upon receipt of academic transcripts and a request for transcript evaluation form. Evaluation request are handled in the order they are received, and usually take two to four weeks. Again, during peak periods an evaluation may take longer. You will be notified on your MyPage e-mail account when your transcript has been evaluated.
My previous college is no longer in operation; how can I get transcripts?
Student records from defunct institutions are usually required to be maintained by some educational agency. The best place to start is with the State Office of Education in the state where your school was located. In unusual cases, an unofficial transcript will be accepted.
I am transferring from a quarter system. How will my credits transfer into the semester system?
If the course is an exact match for a course at SLCC, you will receive the same amount of credit the course is worth at SLCC. If there is not an exact match, you will receive .66 “semester” credit hours for every quarter credit hour.
Who actually decides what credit will be accepted?
The Incoming Transfer Credit Office evaluates the “general requirement” classes, using guidelines from the academic departments, which teach those classes. If there appears to be credit, which would apply toward the student’s specific major, the transcript will be sent to the Academic Advisor for that major, for review of that portion of the credit. The Advisor may consult with faculty members if necessary. The School Advisor returns the transcript and evaluation to the Incoming Transfer Credit Office, which takes care of posting all accepted credit on your transcript.
If I do not agree with the transfer evaluation, how can I appeal it?
If you have questions about how the evaluation was done or you would like to ask for reconsideration of certain courses, simply contact the Incoming Transfer Credit Office.
Can I earn credit through CLEP or other tests?
Yes you can. The available tests are:
I have a lot of work experience. Can I receive college credit for that?
SLCC has not developed a format for evaluating non-classroom learning, other than through tests such as CLEP or Challenge Exams. However, in some cases an appeal can be made to specific departments for an exception.
I am also interested in transferring away from SLCC after I complete my degree; how can I find out which SLCC classes are transferable?
Please Contact the Transfer Advising Office.
REMINDERS:
Before we review the request for evaluation, students must have submitted an application for admission.
Transfer students who are currently enrolled in prerequisite courses at another institution will need to wait until grades have been posted in order to meet our prerequisite requirements. Once grades have been posted, an official transcript must be sent with grades posted to SLCC Enrollment Services AND the REQUEST FOR EVALUATION FORM must be completed.
If grades have not been posted for English 1010 or math courses, students still have the option of taking the Accuplacer for placement. Otherwise, you will need to wait until we have received your official transcript with an official grade posted in order for us to evaluate and post the required prerequisite.
Students who completed math courses more than a year ago must take the Accuplacer for placement.
