"Informational Interviewing" = Talking to people about their jobs!Don't be scared away by the title! An "Informational Interview" is simply a way to hear a more personal perspective about an occupation than you can get from web sites or resource books. Most people like to talk about what they do--whether they love or hate their jobs! Call or e-mail to introduce yourself and politely make your request. Tell the person that you're considering their profession and that you'd like to hear any input they are willing to share. Even if it's a friend of a friend of a friend, someone in occupation X will probably be able to find 15-20 minutes to talk with you. (If not, thank the person for his or her time and find someone else to ask. Don't push the issue!) When you are able to arrange an appointment, dress neatly, arrive at least five minutes early, have questions in mind, and ALWAYS follow the meeting with a thank-you letter! (Thank-you letter information and samples courtesy of Virginia Polytechnic University.) | Questions you might ask: --How did you get into this profession? --What do you like about it? --What would you like to change? --How would you describe a typical day? --Do you have any advice for someone entering the field? --Would you make the same decision again? | Remember, this is just a conversation. Be polite, but have fun...and be sure to keep notes about what you learn!
