Become a TRIO STEM Scholar!

What does it mean to be a TRIO STEM Scholarship recipient?

To be a TRIO STEM Scholar, you are engaging in a life changing experience that will prepare you to become the best STEM degree-seeking student you can be. Not only will you have a dedicated and inclusive community of like-minded folks to surround you through your coursework, but you will get to build lasting friendships and experiences that endure long after you graduate and transfer from SLCC.

As a TRIO STEM Scholar, you will engage in research and academic experiences much sooner than you otherwise would at a university or four-year institution. This will ensure that you have a competitive edge and a developed sense of ownership of your area of interest well beyond your counterparts.

TRIO STEM Scholars will get to experience cohort opportunities, including a designated a writing intensive (WI) course called “STEM 2010: Scientific Proposal Writing.” In this course, you will work with a faculty mentor and develop your cognitive skills as you develop an original research project. If you choose to, you can then complete your research project with your faculty mentor the following semester. This course is required for all TRIO STEM Scholars and will be an incredible asset to your efforts after you graduate and transfer from SLCC!

What is the award?

TRIO STEM Scholars will receive up to $10,700 over two years to complete a STEM degree. Depending on each student’s individual financial aid package, this award is stackable on top of other awards!

Who is eligible?

A successful candidate will:

  • Complete an application and be accepted into the SLCC TRIO STEM program.
  • Meet low-income guidelines to receive full or partial Pell-grant funding or be determined low-income based on annual TRIO low-income guidelines.
  • Be a first-generation college student. First generation means neither parent or guardian has obtained a bachelor's (4 year) degree or higher from an accredited institution of higher learning before you turned 18.
  • Commit to academic program requirements. Applicants must declare an eligible STEM pre-major/transferable degree to receive an award. Eligible departments at SLCC are:
    • Biology
    • Biotechnology
    • Chemistry
    • Physics
    • Mathematics
    • Engineering
    • Engineering Technology
    • Geology and Geographic Information Systems Technology

    • *Unfortunately, Health Science and pre-medical students are NOT eligible.
  • Demonstrate academic talent in their application. Academic talent will be determined by considering the package of application materials which include standardized test scores, high school or college GPA, letters of recommendation, and evidence of community service. However, these measures, do not always predict remarkable grit or resilience demonstrated by some of our most impressive students. For this reason, we will also use a written essay and personal interviews to probe applicants’ academic potential.
