Areas of Emphasis

Animation AAS Degree students,

will prepare themselves for entry level work in an animation related profession. They develop foundation drawing and design skills, apply animation principles in time based visualizations, and illustrate a working knowledge of quality visual storytelling. Students should choose electives and projects carefully to develop a working competency of both the arts and technologies involved in at least one specific area of the discipline.

Animation AS Degree students, New!

will prepare themselves to successfully transfer to an institution offering a four year Animation Degree. Students will work to develop foundation drawing and design skills, apply animation principles in time based visualizations, and illustrate a working knowledge of visual storytelling.

Design

Students who elect to pursue an AAS Degree in Design will prepare themselves for entry level work in various applications of visual art, graphic design and advertising. Graphic creativity and proficiency in current computer programs necessary for employment in the design field are integral parts in this program.

Illustration

Illustration students will prepare themselves for entry level work for traditional and computer illustration. Specializations are book covers, magazine story and spot illus-tractions in black and white, limited color and full color. Students who are preparing for this specialization should acquire a high level of drawing skill.

Multimedia

Multimedia students will become adept at using computers to edit sound and video, create 3D graphics, animation and digital artwork, as well as designing/producing printed collateral and developing websites. These technical skills are complimented by courses that will provide the opportunity to acquire solid art and design abilities. Those with a propensity for learning technical concepts and a artistic aptitude will enjoy the exciting field of multimedia.

Photography

Photography students will learn film and digital camera operation, studio and existing lighting control, working in both digital and film environments to produce color and black and white imagery. This prepares students to work as freelance photographers or continue their education for an advanced degree. Students will learn various visual art business practices and they will prepare a professional portfolio. The final and exit portfolio is a required component of the Photography Program and is designed to obtain an entry-level job within one of the many photography related career paths.

PLEASE NOTE: The photography emphasis student must have access to fully adjustable camera equipment (digital SLR) and additional equipment and supplies as required for this program and its various courses.

Web Design

- NEW DEGREE!

Web Design students will obtain both creative and technical skill sets in Web Design, XHTML, CSS and JavaScript alongside structural knowledge of web marketing, web animation, e-Commerce, the social and mobile web.

Certificate Programs

Mobile Publishing (CC)

Students with an interest in developing web and publishing skills specifically related new trends in mobile publishing through creative and visual methods should consider this specialized Certificate of Completion through the Visual Art & Design Department. Students who elect to pursue this certificate will learn a variety of cutting edge technologies specifically related to electronic and mobile publishing, social media, and new trends as they are developed. Students will stay up-to-date on current trends in industry leading software as well as popular technologies associated with social media, mobile apps, and mobile devices through the required courses.

NOTE: This program is pending approval by the Utah State Board of Regents. Students may apply for graduation in this program beginning Fall Semester 2012.


Motion Graphics and Visual Effects (CP)

Students who elect to pursue a Certificate of Completion Motion Graphics & Visual Effects will prepare themselves to for entry level work in a related profession. Motion Graphics & Visual Effects technical artists find varied careers in the creation of digital 2D and 3D art and animation in the video game, film, broadcast, visual effects, mobile, and Internet industries. Students will work to develop foundation drawing and design skills, apply animation principles in time based visualizations, and illustrate a working knowledge of quality visual storytelling. Students should choose electives and projects carefully to develop a working competency of both the arts and technologies involved in at least one specific area of the discipline. The certificate of completion is very technically rigorous and drawing intensive. It requires careful scheduling of classes to complete the program in the recommended times.

Web Graphic Design (CP)

The Web Graphic Design Certificate of Proficiency is a 27-credit program designed to prepare students to design websites from concept to completion and includes coursework in basic design principles, website architecture, graphic design, web animation, audio and video production, and website promotion. Students will prepare a portfolio of websites they can use to demonstrate their skills to potential employers. This program was created as part of SLCC’s $2.7 million Community-Based Job Training (CBJT) grant from the Department of Labor.

Creative Arts Entrepreneurship (CP)

The Creative Arts Entrepreneurship certificate program helps students develop an understanding of business processes, basic business principles, self-promotion, sales techniques, portfolio preparation, financial techniques and legal issues tailored specifically for students planning to work in creative fields such as the fine and applied arts, design, multimedia, film/video, music, and writing.
