Lineworker Pre-Apprentice Part-time

This one-of-a-kind in the Western United States part-time Lineworker Pre-Apprenticeship program provides students with the core knowledge and fundamental skills necessary for entry-level positions in the electric power industry. This cost-efficient program includes important core knowledge and skills taught in the classroom and in the lab but does not provide the depth of “on-the-job” training that lineworker apprentices receive. Students will be exposed to a wider spectrum of electric power technology topics and the accompanying career options they present so the student will be prepared for multiple career paths.

Traditionally, craft or technician positions of this nature require employees to complete an apprentice program. Apprenticeship programs meet the training needs of employees currently working in the industry.

Prospective students should be prepared for the physical demands of the work of entry-level technician positions when considering program enrollment. Typical industry standards include passing a physical exam and demonstrating the ability to repeatedly lift 50 pounds or more, climbing ladders, working in confined spaces, and working at significant heights.

FAQ

* Is this an apprenticeship?

- The Lineworker Pre-Apprenticeship program is designed to prepare students to obtain an apprenticeship position and includes much of the same training Lineworker apprentices receive in the classroom. Although the program at SLCC does not replicate the same level of “on-the-job” training lineworker apprentices receive, the important core knowledge and fundamental skills are taught in the classroom and in the lab.

* Do I need to purchase my own climbing equipment and tools?

- SLCC Lineworker Pre-Apprenticeship includes all books, hand/power tools, and climbing equipment that students need to participate. Students will need to provide their own Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and climbing boots before the second half of the program starts. PPE cost are approximately $300 per student.

* Do I need a CDL?

- Potential employers may require a CDL from applicants, but students do not need a CDL to participate in the Lineworker Pre-Apprenticeship Program. Students who do not already have a CDL are referred to the Professional Truck Driving (KPDR) program at Salt Lake Technical College and the School of Technical & Professional Specialties.
