Secondary Teacher Transition to Teaching
Secondary teachers in Utah require a Professional Educator License (PEL). Individuals with a bachelor’s degree in a subject area taught in Utah schools may be qualified to teach middle/high school through an Alternative Pathway to Professional Educator Licensing (APPEL) process. Transition to Teaching offers five pedagogy courses for teachers seeking their secondary PEL.

FAQ
* Who is eligible for the APPEL (Alternative Pathway to Professional Educator Licensing) or Transition to Teaching Program?
- Students must have approval from the Utah State Board of Education (USBE) and an Associate Educator License (AEL) to register for classes in the Transition to Teaching Program
* Do I need to be a SLCC student to register for ARL classes?
- Yes, you must be admitted to Salt Lake Community College as a student before you will be able to register for classes. Please view the Registration tab for instructions.
* How do I determine which courses I need?
- Most teacher candidates who are seeking a professional teaching license through APPEL (Alternative Pathway to Professional Educator Licensing) should receive the required courses from their Human Resource Licensing person in their school districts. USBE (Utah State Board of Education) requires that candidates take five pedagogy courses including EDU 2800, EDU 2820, EDU 2840, EDU 2850 and EDU 2860. In addition, elementary teacher must take EDU 2870, EDU 2871, EDU 2872 and EDU 2873. Secondary teachers must take methods course in the area in which they will teach (usually not offered at SLCC).

* What if I need to change my major, update my admissions, or change the term?
- If you are getting error messages while registering for Transition to Teaching courses, you may need to update your major to ARL/Transition to Teaching. In addition if you let a semester or more go by without registering for a class, you may need to update your admissions. Please visit MySLCC and follow these steps
* USBE requires I show progress in the program, how do I order transcripts?
- You can order transcripts. There is a $8.50 fee.
