Vehicle Inspection Programs
Salt Lake Community College collaborates with the Salt Lake County Health Department and the Utah Highway Patrol Division of Public Safety to offer the necessary training for individuals seeking to obtain a new license or renewal to perform various vehicle inspections. These inspections included Applied Emissions, Light Duty Vehicle Inspection, and Heavy-Duty Vehicle Inspection. Upon successfully completing the training program and attaining satisfactory scores, the respective agency will issue the license to the student.

FAQ
* What are the requirements to become a licensed vehicle inspector or emissions technician?
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Have a valid Utah Driver’s License, or an out of state license approved by the department.
- Complete the required number of training hours.
- Pass the exam or hands-on lab activities with needed score.
* How do I get the actual license?
- Vehicle Inspection:
• At the conclusion of the class and with a passing score of 80% or higher on the final exam, your instructor will validate an application. You will submit that directly to UHP along with a non-refundable $7.00 processing fee. We recommend you make a copy of the application for your records before mailing in. SLCC does NOT keep a copy of the document.
- Emissions:
• At the conclusion of the class and with a passing score of 80% or higher you will receive your license via email from the Salt Lake County Health Department.
* What is the difference between Light Duty and Heavy-Duty vehicles?
- Light duty vehicles are passenger vehicles and light duty trucks up to 26,000 GVWR. This training also includes Motorcycle/ATV/UTV inspection.
- Heavy duty vehicles are Tractor, Trailer or Bus, and other vehicles with 26,000 or above GVWR.
Funding
If you are approved for funding, STIT will pay 50% of the cost of the tuition associated with the course.
