Light Duty and Heavy Duty Safety Inspection

Program Inspection

The Utah Highway Patrol (UHP) is the state agency that administers and enforces the vehicle safety inspection program. UHP requires that inspectors for vehicle safety:

  • Take 16-hours of approved training (classes listed below)
  • Pay a non-refundable $7.00 application processing fee to UHP
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Have a valid Utah driver's license, or an out of state license approved by the UHP

Courses

  • Light Duty Safety Inspection

    16 hour class covering the required curriculum from the Utah Highway Patrol to inspect light duty vehicles such as cars, light duty trucks and motorcycles

  • Heavy Duty Safety Inspection

    16 hours covering the required curriculum from the Utah Highway Patrol to inspect heavy duty vehicles such as large trucks and tractor trailers

You must complete one or both of these courses at least once, then you may take the recertification path outlined by UHP as needed to maintain certification.

Recertification

A training and assessment program online to keep your safety inspection certification current must be taken before your present certificate expires. This program is available online
