The NEW Practical Nursing Program prepares students with all the knowledge, skills, and clinical experiences to sit for the NCLEX-PN Exam!

Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) provide nursing care to clients with a variety of health needs. LPNs work in a variety of healthcare settings as they work under the direction of registered nurses, physician assistants, doctors, and dentists. SLTech’s LPN program will prepare you to function as an entry-level nurse. In this program you will receive both classroom theory and practical clinical experience.

Pre-Requirements

Courses

Must have completed all THREE of the following prerequisite courses with a C or better:

  1. Anatomy + Lab (Lab is for future RN programs)
  2. Physiology + Lab (Lab is for future RN programs)
  3. Growth and Development OR Psychology
    1. Introductory courses for Anatomy and Physiology will not be accepted. However, they will be accepted for Psychology or Growth and Development. Integrated Anatomy and Physiology courses will be accepted if both courses have been taken.
  • The prerequisite courses must be taken from a regionally accredited college or university (Utah Valley University, Brigham Young University, Weber State University, Salt Lake Community College, etc.). We do not accept prerequisite courses taken at schools such as Provo College, Ameritech, study.com, etc. If you have a question about your prerequisite courses and/or transcripts, please email bcox2@slcc.edu for assistance.
  • There is no time limit associated with prerequisite courses, but you will most likely be more successful in your completion of the Practical Nursing Program if your prerequisite courses have been taken within the past 4-5 years.

It is the responsibility of the student to make sure the prerequisite courses they take will be accepted at the school where they plan to complete their RN program, if applicable. Courses may be evaluated for acceptance by the practical nursing faculty.

Upon admission into the Practical Nursing Program, students will be required to complete a background check, a drug screen, and provide documentation of current vaccinations to qualify for participation in clinical experiences at healthcare facilities.

Clinical experience is required for successful completion of the nursing program. Students who are in the process of completing prerequisite course(s) may still apply if the course(s) will be completed and a transcript can be produced with a C grade or higher before the first day of nursing classes begin.

Students must have the following to Apply for the LPN Program:

  1. Must be 18 years or older.
  2. Must have a current Nursing Assistant (CNA) Certificate.

Immunizations – student may upload after beginning the program

  • Hepatitis B (proof of three dose  vaccination or proof of immunity by titer).  * Student may start the  TEPN  program with proof of first dose of Hepatitis B vaccination, but must be completed prior to externship.
  • MMR (proof of two dose  vaccination or proof of immunity by titer)
  • 2-step PPD or QuantiFERON-TB – this requires two separate Tuberculin skin tests with negative results or Quantiferon blood test with negative result completed within the past year. If a positive result is given,  proof of a current chest x-ray with a negative result.
  • Varicella (Chickenpox) -  (proof of two dose vaccination or proof of immunity by titer). A letter from the physician stating childhood exposure will not be accepted.
  • TDaP (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis) given within the past 10 years
  • Influenza (given October 1 - March 31) – required yearly
  • Covid immunization (highly recommended)  – Proof of  full immunization is required by most clinical sites. If not immunized, a face shield and mask must be worn at all times during the clinical shifts.
*Note: Clinical sites may have additional requirements to be met for externship placement

Background Check, Drug Screening and Immunizations Compliance

Salt Lake Technical College has contracted the services from American DataBank (ADB) through its comprehensive tool for student screening, immunizations and compliance. This tool, named Complio, is configured to screen for each of the items listed above based on SLTech requirements. Students need to create an account with Complio and SLTech will be notified when compliance has been met.
