Become a Tutor

Tutors in the STEM Learning Centers assist students with concepts from their science, engineering and math courses, helping to clarify misunderstandings, directing students to appropriate study resources, and guiding students through the problem-solving process by asking probing questions. As a tutor with the STEM Learning Centers, you will be expected to help students learn how to be independent and active learners.

Our tutors tutor classes that are taught through the School of Science, Mathematics, and Engineering (SME) at SLCC. The requirements to become a tutor can be found below. We expect tutors to be familiar with the course content and to be successful students, but we don’t expect tutors to be experts. It is more important that tutors can model how to problem-solve and how to learn.

As representatives of the college, tutors are considered professional staff and are expected to refer students to the appropriate college department or resource as needed. Tutors in the STEM Learning Centers are also expected to uphold the values of SLCC and the STEM Learning department.
