This dynamic and relevant event is an opportunity for community college faculty, staff, and administrators to network and learn about promising practices in the field of service learning and community engagement (SLCE). The National Community College Conference on Service Learning and Community Engagement at Salt Lake Community College will feature nationally known presenters, local students and community-based organizations, interactive workshops, and extensive networking time.

Theme and Speakers

The conference theme, Service Learning for the Public Good, speaks to the importance of the work that community colleges do every day. Join the conversation to ensure service learning benefits the public good, in both curricular and co-curricular settings. Conference participants will discover and share the value of service learning in giving students real-world experience that helps to build their academic skills and commitment to their local communities. Speakers and presenters will be announced in the coming weeks.

Registration

The conference rates include breakfast, lunch, and breaks each day. Individual rates are as follows:

  • College faculty/staff/administrators: $335
  • Community partners: $200
  • Students: $100

Conference refund policy: If you are unable to attend the conference, you can either send a substitute or request a refund. All changes must be submitted in writing. Substitutes: Transferring your registration to another individual is allowable at no cost. Contact sean.crossland@slcc.edu with complete contact information about who will attend in your place. Refunds: If you cancel your registration by April 17, 2020, you will receive a refund, minus a $75 administrative fee. Unfortunately, SLCC cannot offer refunds for cancellations received after April 17, 2020. Contact sean.crossland@slcc.edu if you need to request a refund.

Conference Schedule

Schedule times and sessions are tentative and subject to change. A complete list of concurrent sessions will be available by early March.

A new feature of the conference will be 30-minute "ask an expert" clinics, where participants can sign up to discuss syllabi, project ideas, partnerships, strategies, etc., in one-on-one conversations with experienced community college SLCE faculty and practitioners. These clinics will occur at various times across both days. Conference participants will sign up for clinic time slots at on-site registration; availability will be first-come, first-served.

Location and Transportation

Located in suburban Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake Community College Taylorsville-Redwood campus offers a relaxed environment in which to learn from and network with colleagues from across the country. Easy access from Salt Lake International Airport and campus views of the Wasatch front make this the ideal place to reflect on the academic year and plan new service learning opportunities for your students and community partners.

SLCC is approximately 10 miles from Salt Lake International Airport. The conference hotels are located 0.2 miles from the Decker Lake stop on the TRAX lightrail Green Line. Shuttles will be available each morning and afternoon between the conference hotels and SLCC. The campus and nearby hotels are accessible by rental car, taxi, shuttle, ridesharing services, and TRAX lightrail.

located at 2254 W City Center Ct., West Valley City, UT 84119 (801) 736-2000 (2.9 miles from the Taylorsville-Redwood campus). Reserve your room at the special conference rate of $90 per night by April 28, 2020, and reference the Public Good Conference. Hotel highlights: Free hot breakfast buffet, free wi-fi, free airport shuttle, and free shuttle to local offices and businesses within 5 miles.

Holiday Inn Express & Suites Salt Lake City West Valley City
located at 3036 S Decker Lake Dr, West Valley City, UT 84119 (801) 517-4000 (3.4 miles from the Taylorsville-Redwood campus). Reserve your room at the special conference rate of $109 per night by May 14, 2020, and reference the Public Good Conference. Hotel highlights: Free hot breakfast buffet, free wi-fi, located near TRAX lightrail.
