This is Your Association

Completing classes at Salt Lake Community College was only the beginning of your lifelong education.  Now that you are entering into or are already established in your workplace you have the chance to live what you learned, accomplish your aspirations, and experience your education.

Wherever you are in your life or career, the SLCC Alumni Association is here for you.  Whether networking with former SLCC classmates, reading up on your colleagues in the SLCC Alumni Association publications, or attending special SLCC Alumni Association events, the Association will work to provide you with the tools you need to succeed.

Two Distinguished Alumni Named for 2007-2008 School Year

The SLCC Alumni Association named Neal Grover and Teresa Ibarra-Ramirez as 2007-2008 Distinguished Alumni.

Mr. Grover has been with SLCC for 50 years. He began at the Salt Lake Area Vocational School in 1958 as a student. After receiving a Certificate of Accomplishment in 1960, he began teaching in the automotive repair department.

He now is a nationally respected, award-winning auto collision repair technician and is a talented educator. Since 1974, Mr. Grover has headed up national medalists in the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America/Skills USA.

Ms. Ibarra-Ramirez's faith in education qualified her for this award. Her compelling story represents a large population of current SLCC students. Following a difficult divorce in the late 1980s she decided to attend SLCC to improve the lives of her family. After receiving an AAS in Accounting and a Certificate in Credit and Finance, Ms. Ibarra-Ramirez was better able to provide for her children as a single parent.

Today, Ms. Ibarra-Ramirez is a single parent again, caring for two of her 15 grandchildren. She recently entered an essay in a scholarship contest on behalf of her granddaughter. The topic was how education can benefit someone's life. Ms. Ibarra-Ramirez won $5,000 for her essay.

To read more about the two outstanding distinguished alumni, please visit the Distinguished Alumni page.

The SLCC Alumni Council recently decided that there will be two distinguished alumni honored every year during commencement. The two alumni will be selected from nominations submitted to the Council by students, professors, community members, or friends, or family of the alumni.

Also, one nominee will be taken from the Trade Tech disciplines and one will be selected from the Academic disciplines.

To nominate an SLCC Alum to be a distinguished alum, please email the Alumni Association or call (801) 957-4838.

SLCC Alumni Facebook Page Live

The social networking website Facebook now hosts the SLCC Alumni Association online networking functions. If you do not yet have a Facebook account it is as easy as signing up for a Gmail or Hotmail account and takes less than five minutes. Once you are on Facebook, you will have the ability to link to hundreds of other SLCC Alumni who have already taken advantage of this capability.

Facebook will be the first place the Alumni Association will post news and information about upcoming events, fund raisers, speaker series, and other activities sponsored by the Alumni Association.

To register for Facebook, visit www.facebook.com and sign up for a new account. Once you are on Facebook, search for SLCC Alum and add it as a friend. You will be updated regularly about what is going on with the alumni association.

Get Your SLCC License Plate

Commuters can now replace their generic license plates for a plate emblazoned with the vintage SLCC logo. The SLCC plates identify the driver as someone who supports the only comprehensive community college in the Intermountain West. Moreover, the license plates represent a quality education, lifelong memories, and connections with classmates and teachers. In addition, the $25 annual donation does more than connect the driver to the school. It goes the Alumni Association Scholarship fund to assist current and future students to get the start they need and deserve.

To find out more about how to get an SLCC license plate, visit http://dmv.utah.gov/license.html

To find out more about donating to the SLCC Alumni Association, call (801) 957-4838 or e-mail Matt Bunker.
